  4. I don't think that I've ever read a spy novel but I'm somehow fascinated by the idea of people living in totalitarian regimes where everyone spies on everyone else. Applying that to the modern world, we've pretty much got a Panopticon, but it's an open prison. So many data brokers and possible state actors monitoring all forms of communication.

Anyway, this isn't a post about paranoia or conspiracy theories. It's more about people who spy on other people from a distance. I mean, it's supposed to instil fear, I suppose, but I like to think about things from the other perspective. Like, let's say that Fediverse is considered subversive and so needs to be spied on. So, naturally, resources need to be expended to scrape the network, collate the data, figure out network connections and generally get an idea about what the worldview of each of the actors are.

I kind of like to think these people will be surprised at how few of us want to use AI and are so often bitching about it, despite opting out of it as much as we can. Maybe that's how the revolution starts...

  46. #OpenAI says #China ran a covert #campaign to turn Americans against data centers, but used #facts that happen to be true

    source: techspot.com/news/112732-opena…

When discussing rising #electricity #prices, the report says the accounts "claimed" this was the case. But it really is happening, as noted by Bloomberg, which found that prices have risen by up to 267% in areas near data centers.

Now those nasty Chinese are even using the truth against the decent American #people, who are used to nothing but #lies from #Trump.

    source: united24media.com/investigatio…

The report, aired on the Russian state-owned Rossiya-1 television channel, alleges that companies including #Microsoft, #Apple, and #Google are operating in partnership with the US National #Security Agency (NSA) and the #FBI to compromise the #mobile devices of high-ranking government figures, ...

  48. When you generate signs with older AI image generator models like Stable Diffusion 1.5, the text is usually complete gibberish, often with glyphs that only vaguely look like something that might be letters from the Latin and/or Greek and/or Cyrillic alphabet, but not quite.

The idea is to generate signs with such an image generator and hang them in the real world. When people take photos in places where those signs hang, you can later claim the photos are fake, especially since even recent image generators still sometimes produce weird pseudo-text in the smaller background details.

By putting weird broken image slop onto real world surfaces, we can make the world look just as broken and fucked up as it actually is, below the surface. And we might even gain plausible deniability for real actual photos.

  50. Discordian Calendar enjoyers, news:

Just in time for Syaday 3192, I've put together a subscribable vCalendar file so you can add the holidays and 1sts of seasons to your calendar, like your nextcloud or whatever. Wikipedia had a link to a similar thing that's now dead. It's on our Heckin' Technology git, and you can subscribe to the 'raw' file:
