  1. Judging by number of Danes on this #dfds passenger ferry, it is surely time for a reopening of the Esbjerg ferry to UK to facilitate #FlyingLess? - especially as people seek cooler climates for summer holidays, rather than warm ones

  3. Two observations:
    - WiFi is notably slower over the German border
    - Cloud storage and working in the cloud is a pain.

Ruth_Mottram - It's summer holiday time and we're back on the train, this time in 5 changes from Copenhagen to Amsterdam via Hamburg - so far (🤞) mostly on time. I'm astonished too. So let's try not to curse it.

I had planned board games, reading books, having a picnic and photo sorting for this trip. But work is unfinished and since leaving at 6am I've managed to finish two reports, clear some emails and now it's time to look at budgets.

Annoying to work on holiday but everyone else is on a screen too and at least this way I can catch up.

  7. RE: mastodon.social/@infrastory/11

In which we learn* why the International Air Travel Association** loves to muddy the water around the industry's emissions, by blending human and non-human cargo in their carbon footprint stats.

The atmosphere/oceans neither know nor care how many people, fish or iPhones were on a plane. How much fuel the aviation industry burns is the stat that matters.

    * kind of, if you join the dots

**edited to correct IATA (had said ICAO)

  8. Hello again the European Sleeper train, this time from Rotterdam to Dresden.
I love these trains, it's no frills travel in the good sense. The byproduct is that strangers are allowed to talk to one another.

  9. Hello Danmark.
Hello Europe's (imho) least pleasant station, Copenhagen Airport.
The stink of jet fuel greets you even before you leave your incoming train.
A breeze picks up as you wait on the platform and you assume the air will freshen. But of course that air is also filthy with jet pollution, so the only relief is when you stop noticing the noxious fog.
Never mind the climate emergency, why do we allow local air pollution like this?

  10. Hurrah! Another subsidy (approx £40m) to airlines just because the finite resource they're addicted to burning has become a bit pricey for their customers.

Customers whom Sweden's economically illiterate* right wing government wants to vote for them in the autumn election.
(Ah, now it makes perfect sense.)

    * Subsidising wealthy people's use of a limited resource is a sure way to increase risk of actual supply shortages

Hate to break it to you, but (a) the #JevonsParadox has been a thing for about two centuries, and (b) the atmosphere and oceans neither know nor care how many people are on the plane.

  13. @tml Sounds worthwhile in the day too, given @seatsixtyone recommendation,
"If I had to name Europe's most spectacular train ride, it'd probably be the journey from Belgrade to Podgorica and Bar in Montenegro"
    One for the 🚄⛴️ list!

Have any #StayGrounded or #FlyingLess folk here tried it?

  17. In spite of having read several of Iain Banks' non-Sci Fi oeuvre I had never been remotely tempted by the culture novels, though I have friends who raves about them at Uni. Then I spotted this on a summer reading table at the library, which I suppose shows the value of a good librarian...

Ruth_Mottram - Long trip back to Copenhagen starts with EV to Lyon + a packed but slowly emptying train to Geneva, during which I have been completely captured by an #IainMBanks #Culture novel. Actually, surprisingly my first. That's the gift of both train travel and a good book. #bookstodon #booksky #FlyingLess

  23. @Ruth_Mottram Hope you had a good trip - I'm currently in Finland, got here with train to Stockholm, 11h ferry (but with fantastic skærgård views) to Åbo, then train journeys in #Finland. When planning I had hoped to avoid planes, but I either had to reverse my whole route, or include the three baltic countries and get another ferry from Kleipeda - it became too much so ended up with plane ticket Helsinki-Copenhagen. But otherwise nice feeling getting so far away without flying. Other than environmental benefits it feels more real to travel this way, last evening I saw a 'distance to cities signpost' with Esbjerg 1880 km, that's a long way...

  24. Tip for #FlyingLess as a family: prepare for long train rides with board + card games. The #privacy friendly app games by @SECUSO_Research are absolutely brilliant, easy to use, stable + not stealing your data (or trying to sell your kids stuff).

(Edited to give right masto account: top work, thanks Secuso🙏 for the hours of fun your sudoku app has provided already).

Finally approaching Copenhagen 25 hours after leaving Abisko..
My ride today was a little less productive workwise than I'd hoped but enlivened by this inspiring book, bought at #Abisko national park centre. Lots of adventures to be planned in Sweden over coming months and years.... #FlyingLess #CrossborderRail.

  34. @Broadfork The one key issue that was missing from the programme is the highly skewed distribution of flying - small numbers fly enormously more than the majority. #flyingless

  36. Rather good BBC1 programme on the impact of flying, cheap flights in the UK, and the illusion of SAFs, offsets and so on. Justin Rowlatt and Fran Scott present. Dieter Helm lays down the truth about offsets and markets. And a series of liars spin yarns. Some look remarkably unconvinced by their own bullshit. #flyingless bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001

  40. CW: Train evangelism

    Edinburgh-Heidelberg by train

    * Left the house at 10.30pm and was all cosy tucked up in my sleeper berth by 10.45pm. Good night's sleep.

    * Nice leisurely breakfast at St Pancras

    * Nice leisurely lunch in Paris

    * Heidleberg in time for dinner

    * Got loads of work done on the trains, probably more than if I'd spent the day at the lab.

Would recommend, although major downside is that the Calendonian sleeper is more expensive than it should be.

My best #travel experience so far (and possibly ever): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Californ
Definitely not fast - but 2400+mi of travelling in style with a 2bed roomette, onboard restaurant inc. room service, a panorama car (landscape!) and meeting people crazy enough to spend 50+h on a train :-) was great!

  48. We have tried to cut back on flying. This was our last trip to see the in laws before they permanently move closer to us next year and I really hope we can stick to our every other year plans for getting on a plane barring family emergencies.

WestJet wanted to know if I would recommend them for travel and this is my response.

Airlines can compensate you but I bet the people who lost their ability to walk would rather still be able to walk.

  50. @CarbonBubble On BBCWS Weekend, this question was discussed briefly opening with a scientist pointing to the clear link. The rest fo the discussion degeneratee into the question of "would more turbulence and wearing a seatbelt put you off flying" to which the answer was a very firm "No". The disconnect was breathtaking.
For context, one of the commentators was in South Africa. London-Jo'burg return is 2 tonnes CO2e. Average per capita emissions for the UK 6 tCO2e…#flyingless

  51. #SETACSeville here we come! Off on a sustainable train journey from Lancaster to Seville, courtesy of a great value Interrail pass.

The journey is about 31 hours door to door, and including a hotel in Paris, cost ~£400 door-to-door. Perhaps not as cheap as a budget airline, but when you add in transit costs and baggage, it's not too far off. And honestly, it's much more comfortable.
