North Carolina Wreck Diving: The Bruse Reeb

North Carolina is often called the Graveyard of the Atlantic, home to hundreds of shipwrecks scattered along its coast. While the famous wrecks like the U-352 and the Spar get most of the attention, some of the most memorable dives come from the lesser-known sites hidden offshore.

On a recent trip with Gotham Divers, aboard Atlantis Charters out of Beaufort, NC, we headed out to a site nicknamed the Wreck of the Bruse Reeb – Bow Section. It’s not one of the marquee wrecks you’ll see in guidebooks, but that’s exactly what made the dive so interesting—quiet, atmospheric, and full of life.

Exploring the Wreckage

The bow section of the Bruse Reeb lies scattered across the seafloor, its remnants slowly being reclaimed by the ocean. Rusting beams and plates provide structure for schools of fish that weave through the wreckage. Though modest in scale compared to other North Carolina wrecks, it offered plenty of details to notice and film, making the dive feel like a mix of history and marine life.

Crossing Paths with Another Diver

Also on board that day was Squalus Marine Divers, who was filming the dive for his own channel. Around the 10-minute mark of his video, he was capturing footage of a perfectly camouflaged summer flounder when I drifted into the frame. Flounders are masters of disguise. You usually won’t notice them until they shift or flick their fins. It was a fun, unscripted moment to have both of us filming the same fish from different angles.

Why North Carolina Diving Stands Out

This dive was a reminder of what makes North Carolina wreck diving so special. Beyond the well-known sites, there are countless smaller wrecks scattered offshore, each with its own atmosphere and ecosystem. From Beaufort to Morehead City, operators like Atlantis Charters make these sites accessible, giving divers the chance to experience both the legends and the hidden gems of the Graveyard of the Atlantic.

That way, they can focus on their core competencies of multimeter frontend, protection circuitry, function generation, low-level signal processing, and so on., while leveraging the phone's high-level data processing, massive storage, AI coprocessor, graphics coprocessor, touch UI, large screen, customisability, programmability, and the like, not to mention the fact that every #EE pockets a mobile, these days.

These two devices can then interact via a high-bandwidth cable or near-field connection.

As a long-time user of traditional multimeters (I started on the Simpson 260 analogue VOM, before switching to a Fluke DMM), it sickens me to say that. But I do believe this trend is inevitable. Some might even argue that such a mode shift necessary and good.

One of the many weird things my dad left me was his #Fluke digital #multimeter. It's decades old, but Fluke is know for its high quality and it's still worth a small fortune. It was however incredibly dirty and in need of a thorough cleaning. Naturally I took it #apart, chugged some of it in the dishwasher, cleaned the rest by hand, relubed what need to be lubed and put the whole thing back together. With great #success, I might add. Feelt a bit like hanging out with my #dad again. Good times.

Doing my best to keep on saving Raspberry Pis from the dustbin 😊.

This one arrived with 8 green led blinks - well known RAM chip soldering issue.

It takes some time, but mostly reflowing does the trick.

It did this time as well - you can see it from the impedance on one of the RAM IC caps and USB tester - so we have one more happy customer 🙌🏻.

I’m also looking at Fluke 289, but I’m hesitant because:
1. Price
2. It’s around 15 years old (it has IR port!)
3. Eats batteries like mad
4. Takes time to turn on
5. No LCAP mode despite it has Lo-Z
6. No CD or cable included - it’s around 150$ extra to be able to connect it to the computer - which results in around 1000$
7. Those same cheap probes included. Why, Fluke?

Otherwise the functionality and accuracy are really exciting.

Btw I chose Fluke 117 if anyone is interested 😃.
Mainly because:
1. Price
2. It’s a relatively new model
3. It has NCV (VoltAlert) - will come in handy with future apartment repairs
4. It has Lo-Z and more importantly as it turned out - LCAP mode that allowed me to troubleshoot my guitar pedalboard setup recently.

In general it’s awesome. One thing I hate is the included probes. Swapped those for the proper silicone ones.

Since I have recently bought my first Fluke I’ve been diving pretty deep into the multimeter topic and one thing that makes Flukes more than worth for me is surprisingly the way diode checking works. The famous chirp and beep they produce. Can’t really explain why most other meters don’t follow - it makes troubleshooting so much easier and faster 🙌🏻

First I made short patch cords to connect pedals. I thought it would be an easy job and it was, but, man, it took hours or boring soldering and even more so - desoldering and disassembling old cables in order to salvage jacks. But I did it and it was already much cleaner.

Next I plan to rewire power underneath the board.

Since it’s #blackouts in #Ukraine again - time to fix a small #UPS that I bought as broken months ago.

Originally it had a cheapest #BMS that got HOT and same level batteries - 8/12 were dead when I got it.

I replaced batteries with proper 3000+ mAh ones wired in 3S4P and a 40A BMS - now it stays stone cold and should power my router for 10-12 hours.

Spot welded it today during blackout and soldered with my #Hakko powered by #Bluetti 😆.
