  1. Another welcome visitor on my aphid-infested fava beans, a syrphid fly larva (or pre-pupa). Might take it home and rear it to adulthood so I can get an ID. I love having my desk covered in vials of mystery critters. #SyrphidFlies #HoverFlies #FlowerFlies #aphids #syrphidae #diptera

  2. CW: cute shiny flower fly and whitish flower spider on flowers

@plants not surprisingly, mass flowering like this is important to various local critters-- bees and #FlowerFlies of many sorts are often seen on the flowers and a #spider has found a good spot to wait for prey!

  5. CW: bee, insects on flowers

@nature @plants #ThrowbackThursday #InsectThursday Sunny days in #June near #SummerSolstice (very different from my current views of white!). A #bumblebee on #WildRose Rosa acicularis +several of the many kinds of #FlowerFlies #DroneFlies and others that do important #pollinator work besides other roles in the ecosystem #biodiversity #insects #florespondence #NativePlants #gardening

  6. CW: #insect close up of flower fly

#ThrowbackThursday meets #InsectThursday with this photo of a stunning #fly from early #June. I've just realised in recent years how many #FlowerFlies #DroneFlies etc there are, plus many flies that nectar (therefor pollinate) at some point in their life cycle. Very important players in the ecosystem! This one is on a wild Caltha palustris #flower
