Forget-me-nots (Miosotis), this particular species likely Miosotis scorpioides, or the marsh forget-me-not, are now forming pale blue patches in the floodplain forest. They have replaced the previous white patches of snowdrops and the vibrant colors of various early spring plants. Wild garlic is also getting ready to bloom. Then parts of the forest floor will be white again, and the forest will smell of garlic.

Dead trees are a common feature of the landscape here. Some have been destroyed by age, some by fungal diseases (ash trees). Some are uprooted by the wind or felled by beavers. Trees regularly fall into the meandering river, which erodes the banks. Dead trunks stand or lie here, covered with moss, colonized by fungi and used by insects. Bats hide under the bark. Sometimes I walk through the forest and hear the loud fall of a large tree.

Yesterday's sunset in the forest, where melting snow left old riverbeds of extinct meandering streams full of cold water. The trees are still bare, but snowdrops already cover the ground, and clusters of flowers hang from the branches of hazel trees, spreading yellow clouds of pollen around them when I brush against them.

The mighty oak is my favorite tree. Its trunk is slanted, making it more accessible to rain, and so it has become overgrown with moss up to a height of several meters. Several species of moss and other small plants grow here. Unfortunately, even though this is a protected area, it is not a no-intervention zone. Logging is still taking place here, and the area around the tree has now been cleared. At least they left some trees standing.

Not moss, but liverworts (Marchantiophyta) are thalloid green plants, one of the oldest and most primitive terrestrial plants in terms of evolution. Lophocolea heterophylla is very small and its leaves are thin and translucent. Found on dead oak wood in a floodplain forest.

I used a flash to illuminate the transparent tails of Hypnum cupressiforme moss, wet from the rain, while taking photos. There isn't much light on a rainy day. That day, I found more species of moss than I expected in a small area of the forest. It paid off to walk off the trail. I just hope I didn't disturb the deer or wild boars whose path I was walking on too much.

Long spikes of ice crystals protrude from a piece of rotten wood. Beneath them lies the frozen surface of a forest stream.

Creeping moss, Brachythecia, climbs up tree trunks in the forest. In this area, it grows up to a meter high when the trunk is vertical. The more the trunk is inclined, the more rain falls on it and the moss can grow higher. And it retains water. I saw a tree trunk covered with moss ten meters high. The tiny black balls on the tree bark are organisms that I have not been able to identify.

This helmet fungus grows by the trail on the trunk of a massive maple tree. There's no chance of spotting it when I walk by—it's about one millimeter in size. Today it's cloudy. My eyes are drawn to a white spot. A tiny piece of bird droppings on the bark. Several helmet mushrooms, much smaller and almost invisible, are growing a few centimeters away. My tripod can't reach that high, so I take the photo by leaning my phone against the bark.

Velvet foot mushrooms, Flammulina velutipes, grow even in winter. They are good in soup, but so small that they are not worth picking and carrying home.

Schizophyllum commune is a common fungus that grows on dead wood. It grows even in winter and is covered with a white fur. I found some fallen tree trunks that had been cut down by beavers. They were so overgrown with this fungus and tiny fruiting bodies that I almost had nowhere to sit and drink a cup of tea.

Today I visited my neighbors. I rarely see them, and even then it's usually from a boat on the river. They have a different rhythm of life, being more active at night. And they don't like people. However in their territory I saw two castles protecting their dwellings, many well-trodden paths, a lot of unfinished work. And tracks in the mud.
As a bonus I am attaching an example of beaver art. Note the detail of the workmanship, shows the structure of wood.

White coral fungus, Hericium coralloides, a rather rare mushroom. I found several specimens for the first time in a floodplain forest, in an area that is periodically flooded. It grows on wood, in this case on two trunks some distance apart. Although the tips look fragile, like snowflakes, they are quite firm, and the mushroom has an intense aroma.

I can never resist photographing translucent moss leaves. Here is probably Mnium marginatum, covered with water after rain. That's how it is—I see a shiny miniature drop of water in the moss when I walk through the forest. I find it on the display when I use macro mode, and I marvel at its beauty. Then I lie down on the ground and try to focus the shot until I get it right.

The tiny Lamium maculatum shines with the color of its flowers in the autumn undergrowth of the floodplain forest. Only when magnified can you see how hairy they are.

When I walk through the floodplain forest and my eyes search for small objects, I sometimes have to switch to "just walking" mode, when my eyes focus on larger things such as the path and trees. I switch modes like this, and thanks to that I can see even very small things, such as these mushrooms. In the photo on the right, you can see them in the moss if you zoom in a little—it's a moss-covered oak branch lying on the ground.

I like to photograph miniature mushrooms growing on tree trunks. Simply because they are so tiny. Few people notice them. However, my camera has a problem with the color white—it renders everything white as a flat white surface without any detail. Now I've found a setting that eliminates this—I reduce the brightness of the photo so that the white details are beautifully rendered and the dark background creates a good contrast.

After heavy rains, I wander through the forest and photograph miniature mushrooms. Helmet mushrooms grow on tree bark and are white or brown, or white with specks—Frosty bonnet. They need moisture for their fruiting bodies to appear. This is a flat landscape crisscrossed by rivers and streams, overgrown with forest, with only occasional meadows. It is a protected landscape area typical of floodplain forests.

Little mushroom photographed in moss on the branch of an old oak tree. Both the moss and the mushroom are miniature and completely overlooked. You can only see them if you search purposefully with your nose almost in the moss. And then take a picture of them - if my cell phone could talk, it would probably say, "Dude, what do you want from me? I'm not a camera for hundreds of euros. I'm a smartphone camera with a macro function."
But in the end, it worked.

Reed spider, Tetragnatha extensa is tiny. I accidentally brought the spider home from the forest on my bike. Its web was stretched between the handlebars, where it had built it when the bike was lying in the reeds by the river. Without magnification, it was just a tiny light-colored spider, one centimeter in size, including its legs. But it is very beautiful. I am often amazed by what I see on the display when I take a macro shot.

Wild Cucumber, Echinocystis lobata, has been in Europe since about 1900, having been introduced from the Americas. After the seeds shoot out of the fruit at speeds of up to 40 km/h, the shell gradually degrades, leaving a net-like lantern with thorns. It grows around rivers, and the river spreads its seeds.

I took pictures of the tiny mushrooms last month. Sometimes I have more good photos, and I don't want to overcrowd the feed. It's probably Hemimicena lactea. I like to take pictures of these mushrooms in the wet woods best - because they are so tiny that if it weren't for macro photography, no one would see their translucent beauty. The slightly green shade of the mushrooms is the result of the reflection of the surrounding green forest.

The evening sun shone through the trees and gilded this little landscape on the trunk.

You'll never see this moss again. It's too small. On the trunk of a tree lying on the ground in a damp forest, it looks like a fine green coating, like green paint on wood. It wasn't until I was magnified that I saw its texture, the delicate green leaves. Surprise.
Genus Platygium, brobably.

The alder tree on the lake shore has new leaves. I wouldn't have seen them if I hadn't gotten in the water to photograph the water lilies.
Maybe your Mastodon app is displaying lower quality thumbnails. Tap the photo to see if it was displayed at full resolution.

Last weekend, I went into the swamp again. It's close, it's quiet. It's almost impassable terrain this time of year. A tangle of plants, wet below, trees above. When I want to walk through, I have to crouch down into a squatting position under the branches, then stretch my leg forward, push off the nearest nettle and take a squatting step. When I try to focus the camera, a mosquito sticks its snout into me. Photo of the spot - the fallen trunk is my target.

One more frog. A really tiny one.
#nature #macrophotography #frogs #floodforest -
One little frog for today. There were a lot of them on the way around the river. They're so small and so well camouflaged that I have trouble seeing them if they're still. And this one could rival the famous moss frogs for invisibility.

I took a small telescope into the woods to see the birds. It's not working. When I hear a bird, I can't see it. When I see them, they see me and flies away, screeching at me. Probably something like, "Help, the bad guy is staring at me with a glass eye!"
The ornithologist probably has a secret deal with the birds. I don't.
I preferred to shoot the moss as usual.#nature #SilentSunday #moss #mosstodon #macro #macrophotography #floodforest #LittleWorldsAroundUs

Grimmia pulvinata This moss forms little pillows, that's what it's called in my language. But in the macro photos you can see its strange reproductive parts, which look like translucent green melons. Even now in winter they are beautiful, but these melons are actually only one millimeter. They are a much kind of moss, but only this one has melons 😃. You see the white hairs typical of this species.

Moss photographed on a cold winter's day, but the shells that will spread the spores are already. When the warmth comes, it will be time to breed.

Helmet-fungi grow even in winter. But I walked through a piece of forest before I found them on a lying tree trunk, growing out of the moss. They're only a few millimeters long, and this species is a pretty purple color. In a shaded forest, in winter, I wouldn't have taken a photo without the low sun between the trees.

A sunny winter day allowed me to take beautiful photos today. But you won't have the experience I had because you won't hear the sound of water in the creek and the cries of the raven in the sky.

Something to calm you down. I wasn't expecting this dude now, early winter. Tetrodontophora are little blue-grey animals, like moss cows.
I don't have a tripod, but with my hand resting on the trunk, the macro video was good. I would have liked to show you face to face but there was something good to eat.
That's the advantage of macro - we're so big for these little guys that they don't notice us when we're shooting.

I like to lay on the ground on wet days to take a photo like this. Moss lives in a small-scale transition space, creating miniature landscapes where humidity and temperature changes are enough to give its leaves what they need.

Hedge Lizard
Zootoca vivipara
Two very calm lizards got their picture taken on a tree trunk while we were helping my friend with the sheep and goat pens today.I was actually at work, as a social worker with a client and her friend, but at the same time it was a great way of being in time. I can't post pictures of the work, but I can post pictures of the lizard.
