@Kerplunk : defragmenting flash-memory based storage media not only is pointless, it reduces media lifetime because each flash storage "cell" can endure a limited number of writes.
Defrag was sometimes useful on spinning hard disks, in particular to limit the number of physical movements that magnetic read/write heads have to make to read an entire file.
Because the number of writes per flash cell is limited, better flash drives employ "wear leveling" whereby storage blocks (typically 512 bytes in size or multiples thereof) are deliberately relocated (remapped) to other parts of the flash memory chip.
From the outside of the flash drive this is invisible. If the operating system asks the drive to read the contents of e.g. the very first block of the drive (block 0), the drive may have internally remapped it to physical block number 987. If the OS instructs the drive to overwrite block 0, the drive may decide to change the internal remapping from 987 to 123.
Therefore, fragmentation of flash memory is *normal anyway* - but you can't "fix" it.
OTOH it is not a problem: the time consumed by addressing a different (non-consecutive) area in flash memory is negligible (unlike hard drives, there is no physical movement of read/write heads).
Don't defrag flash memory!

The AI memory super-cycle has a shadow story.

The AI memory super-cycle has a shadow story.
While headlines track HBM allocation and DDR5 contract resets, 2D NAND prices just spiked 2–3× in the corner of the market that powers automotive ECUs, factory PLCs, network switches, and medical devices.
What happened: Samsung announced MLC NAND end-of-life with final shipments in June 2026. Micron, SK hynix, and Kioxia capped legacy output. TrendForce projects worldwide MLC capacity dropping ~42% YoY in 2026.
What's filling the vacuum: Macronix Q1 2026 revenue +71% YoY, gross margin 40.8%, NAND revenue +382% YoY. Macronix moved customers from quarterly to monthly pricing. Winbond approved a record NT$42.1B 2026 capex and says capacity is booked through 2027.#NANDFlash #MemoryShortage #ITAD#MLCNAND #SLCNAND #2DNAND #EmbeddedMemory #FlashMemory #Macronix #Winbond #Samsung #Micron #SKHynix #Kioxia #AIInfrastructure #HBM #DRAM #DataCenter #AIMemory

"The small #flashmemory device, which #Fudan University began exploring in 2015, is said to outperform today’s fastest volatile memory (such as SRAM) by a factor of more than 100,000. While SRAM and DRAM offer speed, they are volatile and expensive. On the other hand, flash storage, though persistent, has lagged behind in speed. The researchers’ new approach seeks to bridge that gap, potentially redefining memory and computing architecture."

"Because #PoX is non‑volatile, it retains data with no standby power, a critical property for next‑generation edge AI and battery‑constrained systems. Combining ultra‑low energy with #picosecond write speeds could remove the long‑standing memory bottleneck in AI inference and training hardware, where data shuttling, not arithmetic, now dominates power budgets.
Industrial and strategic implications:
#Flashmemory remains a cornerstone of global #semiconductorstrategy thanks to its cost and scalability. #Fudan’s advance, reviewers say, offers a “completely original mechanism” that may disrupt that landscape. "https://interestingengineering.com/innovation/china-worlds-fastest-flash-memory-device

For that niche of people (like me) who have mirrorless/DSLR cameras, GoPros, or drones, Samsung has some new pro-branded SD and MicroSD cards. 130MBps write speed, good for 4K video. 200MBps read speed should be helpful for video transfer. $73 for 512GB MicroSD, $93 for 512GB SD. Curious: Samsung touts their lower power usage.
