So, service message for everyone:
given how the clone was taken (https://tinkerdifferent.com/threads/flaccid-ostrich-floppy-emu-compatible-clone.5019/), I am pulling the #FlaccidOstrich back to private.

The reasoning is, why I am convinced that I am in the clear legally (redesigned board, open bootloader, no selling), the fact that it was taken like this means it risks being damageful for the community.

I don't want to damage a community, I understand the PoV of the people in that thread, especially the original author who has moral authority over this.

I guess this will come back if the product becomes EOL and stops being sold!

The Flaccid Ostrich is a clone of #FloppyEmu, a floppy/smartport emulator for #apple2 and #Macintosh computers.

I recreated the schematics to repair my original unit, and while I was at it, I decided to build a clone using THT technology, just in case someone wants some DIY.

It was more damageful to community than expected, which wasn't my intention.

Ok, I guess it's time for the least funny part: adding the documentation to the #FlaccidOstrich repository, the BOM, etc etc etc.

Then release it. Maybe tomorrow, or the day after.

On to lighter things.
If on is hell bent in building a totally no-SMD version of the #FlaccidOstrich, it can be done.

If you're fine in searching for the elusive PLCC XC9572XL, risking magic smoke to come out from fake ICs, you can also avoid soldering the microSD slot and use one of these premade modules, plugged into the provided header. They just work!

Built a second #FlaccidOstrich PCB, using a PLCC variant of the PLD. It works (I noticed I missed a GND connection though... Bodge!).

I don't recommend to build this variant though. The PLCC version is rare. I could find a few from a dubious source and, indeed, the first IC got incandescent. The second could not get programmed correctly, the third worked.
