  3. Had to fix the loop holding one end of the strap on my old leather briefcase. Rivets through leather and 4-stranded flat wire. Should last.

  5. #nerdalert #smd #helpneeded #electronics #fixer #repair Has anyone got a steer on what this is, I’m drawing a blank. It’s on the power supply board for a heating system. The DF04S that feeds it is blown, so is a 78M05 nearby (as well as 3 opto isolators). Suspect a lightning strike.

  8. Rebuilt the brakes on my old Redline bike

I'm pleased I had these old umbrella parts as I highly doubt I'd find replacement OEM springs for a bicycle I bought in 1984

  12. Just swivelled this account over to this new home. We'll be posting as often as we can, but that won't be as often as we'd like at the moment as the priority is to get some data analytics done so that we can post a few stats and stuff as well as automating a few posts if at all possible. This means that Python needs (re)learning and all of the stuff that goes with it. We'll try and keep some posts coming though. #repaircafe #repaircafes #fixer

  14. Sorry for the radio silence. Just a mix of too much to do and me being lazy. We've still doing two #repaircafes a month. First and third Saturdays of each month. Probably not December though. Well, not the third Saturday anyway. Maybe make the other a specialist one. Who knows.

Anyway, latest stats for those interested. #repaircafe #fixer #repair

  16. Repair Cafe in Rugby this morning. Had to cancel this afternoon's RC at the Coventry Salvation Army shop this afternoon as we didn't have enough fixers to run the show. Shame, but it's August so a quiet month anyway.

Rugby rarely suffers significantly quiet months. Never less than 20 items per session anymore.

We're good at breaking things in Rugby and, thankfully, also good at getting them fixed again. 🙂

  18. We're getting our repair results uploaded today so the charts should be on Repair Monitor tomorrow. I'll look at getting them up on here then.

In the meantime a quick shout out to Repair Cafe Coventry which happened today. I haven't got a Mastodon account for that yet as I'm kinda run ragged at the moment as it is without another social media account to fuss over. Sorry. #repaircafe #repair #fixer

  20. So last Saturday was our second and thus last #RepairCafe in June. I predicted another quite session like the previous one, but everyone was very happy to point out that I got it wrong and we were almost as bust as usual.

We still get new people coming along to become volunteers and so I think that we're still pretty much getting it right. It's all about keeping people happy, isn't it? Short term by volunteering and long term but helping the environment.

  21. Taken me a while to remember to update the stats for this year to date, sorry.

Anyway, the numbers are fairly straight forward. Our repair percentages barely change but it's interesting to see that our textile fixers are really starting to shine.

The next #repaircafe is tomorrow and I'll have more photos and stats for you all then.

  24. OK, so here's the data. Kinda. We're running second in a non-existent race to do the most fixes in the UK this year.

As for the the Fixed / Partial Fix / Binned stats, I'm only monitoring our Binned rate as these are the items that have gone to landfill. Everything else has managed to stay in use one way or another and that is what counts to me.

  25. Today was our second #RepairCafe in #RugbyTown in May. Things have, as expected, quietened down a little since we started opening twice a month. Enough items to keep us busy to the end of the session, but not so busy that we have to turn people away. I think that two people did leave without getting their items repaired, but I think that was because they turned up too near to the end of the session. New #repairers joined today too.

I shall confess that I have recently built an adjustable bench top power supply with an old laptop charger and some bits off eBay and I took it with me today to do some real world testing. It passed with flying colours so I'm quite proud of that. (AKA no one died and nothing exploded.)

I'll upload our stats once #RepairMonitor has made them available.

  26. Results from Saturday's #RepairCafe in #RugbyTown. We use #RepairMonitor to log all of our work so that it's captured by Repair Cafe International. This gives us a few stats and thanks to the fact that we have a session on the first Saturday of the month and that we have two sessions per month, we are currently at the top of the Items Through the Door chart. The percentage fixed measure isn't one that we get competitive about. As long as the end of life number is low, then we're happy.

  27. Another 1st Saturday and another #repaircafe in #RugbyTown. This one was quieter than usual. Or maybe we should say less chaotic.

Today's mix included a stereo that was in for its third session and was finally condemned. The processor seems to be fried. One of the few bits we can't replace.

We gave a shovel a new handle. That required planing the handle and adding a bolt. We don't often need woodworking tools, but thankfully we have a Library of Things and that contained a plane.

The most satisfying item for me was a folding pram frame that wouldn't lock in place anymore. Looks like the manufacturing process damaged the riveted hinge pins. We drilled them out and replaced them with bolts and it's as good as new. The perfect example of a design that discourages repair of minor failures by fixing everything together with rivets. #fixer #repair @repaircafe

  28. So, having uploaded our fixes from yesterday onto #RepairMonitor we can now see how we are doing officially.

I should point out that I really don't think that all UK repair cafes upload their results to Repair Monitor, so this isn't very official at all, but it makes us feel good.

  29. We were expecting (read hoping for) a quiet session today to allow us to also do some organising, It was slightly less busy (chaotic) than usual, but still kept us busy for the full three hours.

The forms haven't been uploaded to #RepairMonitor yet, but when they have been I'll post the charts.

For now here are some photos from the event.

  30. I've decided to create an account here for the Rugby #RepairCafe. Hopefully it'll have been authorised by the #MastodonApp.UK team by tomorrow afternoon and then I can start posting. I think that a separate account might just be enough of a push to get me off my arse and post regularly again.

  32. Last Saturday was our first #RepairCafe in our new time slot. I was a little concerned that we might not get any custom, but 33 items through the door was a nice number. Not to hectic but enough to keep us busy until about 20mins before the end of the session. Managed to tidy up and leave on time. Result.

  33. #repaircafe today. 2025 seems to have been a real change for us. We averaged about 25 items per session last year but we did 37 last month and 46 today. We made the decision to extend the length of the session today by an hour and we're opening twice a month too. Let's see how March goes...

  34. #RepairCafe in #Rugby yesterday. A busy one with 37 items through the door and a few more turned away. I really don't like turning people away so we are now going to consider having a second monthly session. Maybe a week day evening? We need to give it some though. #fixer #repair
