When I fish a lake I divide the lake in two sections horizontally. The upper decction extends from the surface to ~8'.
The second section from ~8' to the bottom but no more than 28'.
Lures that are fished from the surface to about 8' are typically retrieved horizontally.
Deeper than 8', I used lures that are mostly fished vertically.
Fish like large & smallmouth bass, walleye, & pike caught in 28'+ water can suffer barotrauma and die.

This is when you take a long enough break at noon to build a fire and grill fresh fish from the water they were caught, along with canned beans and fried potatoes and, if you get fancy, biscuits baked in a Dutch oven. I still have my father's old tackle box just as he left it the last time he went fishing nearly a half century ago. I take it down from the pantry shelf & open it every few years for sentimental reasons. This is now done as a private observance, because in the past, I've shown it to collectors who all said it was a damn shame that the potentially valuable old lures weren't in mint condition in their original boxes but had actually been *fished*.
