  1. The ghost farms choking Greece’s coastline

Greece’s coastline is dotted with abandoned aquaculture sites. The giant rings and other decaying infrastructure are poisoning the sea and local economy with microplastic and huge plastic waste. We accompanied a Greek NGO trying to banish these ghost farms.

  2. Salmon farms generate export income and support jobs ( a relatively limited number), but just a reminder that they are bad. Bad for the animals and bad for the environment (with pollution and escapees being implicated fin the decline in our wild fish)

  3. Scotland’s coastal waters are at risk. There's mounting evidence of the damage caused by industrial salmon farming, including a quarter of fish dying before they reach your plate, pollution to our seas, and threats to wild salmon.

A parliamentary report found that Scotland's marine ecosystem faces "irrecoverable damage" from an expansion in fish farming, with one in five farms failing to meet statutory environmental standards.

  6. While this is a UK investigation, I regularly see farmed fish, esp branzino (a Mediterranean sea bass) from overseas in US markets - Even in coastal areas, where I can get excellent local fish. Why? Yes, it's cheaper. And why shouldn't we have cheap good food? Maybe because the low price doesn't reflect the actual costs. Pity a sustainability labeling folks don't look at a total impacts. Another area of market failure.

    > Solar panels can be great for farms

When I traveled down the Pacific coast of China by train, I saw a lot of solar panels mounted over big ponds, which I assume were fish farms.

  11. #SeaShepherd Global has released footage and images of large industrial #krill #supertrawlers, once again #trawling in large pods of #whales off the #Antarctic Peninsula.
100 per cent of #Australian pharmacies surveyed carried krill oil products from the Antarctic and that Biomar, a #fish feed producer in Wesley Vale, #Tasmania, used up to 1200 tons of krill meal per year. This is the equivalent of 1 billion individual krill. #fishfarming #sustainability
