Looking forward to seeing the chum salmon arrive in my area again. This photo is from last year in Carkeek Park in Seattle. While their ocean phase is silver, their freshwater spawning phase develops some exciting colors and stripes! Do you have winter runs of salmon near you? I'm looking for more places for photos.

The annual pump out of the large lock at Ballard Locks is underway. Today was fish rescue day when we capture any Endangered Species Act listed fish and release them to Puget Sound. Then we do our best with everything else. No salmon found, so it was easier than most years. The area is under construction to replace the 100-year-old center gates, which will take a couple months. Here are a few scenes from the fish biologist perspective.

Here’s what a fish rescuer looks like! The bottom of the large lock chamber is really interesting, but the tunnels along the sides are super creepy. We typically rescue several salmon, thousands of herring and sticklebacks, and a bunch of other miscellaneous fish. One year my coworkers had to deal with a 6-foot sturgeon. Bummer I missed that day!
Now who has my bucket?
