  1. Event seemingly aimed at UC Davis undergrads.

"Hands on the Land and the Society for Conservation Biology Davis Chapter would like to invite you to their How to Apply to Graduate School Workshop! If you're curious about graduate school or think you might apply in the future, this is a great opportunity to learn about the process from current graduate students. This event is free and there will be pizza!" #FirstGen #GradSchool #HigherEd

  3. While everyone is anticipating the latest comebacks and releases, I'm out here digging for 1st Gen K-Pop gold 🪙 @jemmesedi and I were talking about "Dreams Come True" which was covered by aespa in 2022. He enlightened me that this song was previously performed by SES in the late 90's. I had to look up that version and of course it's amazing. Such a hooky song, with great vocals and that awesome synth line.

  4. To all who remember the real struggles and near-misses of earning a degree, as #firstgen, a gender minority of color, or striving to live in the very city you hope to work in.

Please consider supporting today's students, if able, by donating to Women of Color Alliance's Luminary Scholarship by 3/1: givebutter.com/the-woca-lumina

  5. Ich hatte aber früher nie den Berufswunsch „Wissenschaftlerin“. Ich bin #firstgen Akademikerin und Wissenschaft als Job stand bei mir anfangs gar nicht auf der Liste der möglichen Karrierewege.

  6. This can be a great strategy to retool for your future--especially if you live in a state like New Mexico that takes educating a large proportion of #FirstGen college attendees as a serious priority, with in-state tuition almost A THIRD OF this article's stated average--which can often be reduced TO ZERO through state grants & financial assistance specifically aimed at helping these populations.

At these states' flagship institutions--like The University of New Mexico--the realities the article mentions of juggling work ,school, and home life are mitigated through widespread availability of classes online--but still taught by the same faculty you'd have on campus--and timed to fit your schedule. And through a campus culture and a faculty that honors the struggles you make, to make a better future.

Whether you're a new aspiring #undergraduate or an experienced professional with ANY technical degree contemplating a return to #GradSchool--like countless Soldiers I've mentored in the four decades since my OWN military career began--accredited programs like UNM Organization, Information & Learning Sciences (OILS), with degree & certificates from the bachelors to the Ph.D., can equip you with the evidence-based tools & methods at the intersection of recruiting, training, HR, and analytics, to design, lead, and evaluate the workforce readiness programs for your current organization, or charting an entirely new path.

I'm a first gen college grad and trying to learn about investing, a master's degree, and be a teacher.

  12. Extremely interesting project and idea. Curious to see the potential ripple effects.

“Research shows that high schoolers who take college classes are more likely to attend college and graduate, but there’s little research on how middle school students fare, said John Fink, a senior researcher at Columbia University’s Community College Research Center. “Nationally, and in most states, this is very, very rare, and in many states this is not allowed.” Instead, he said the focus is typically on enrolling more 10th, 11th and 12th graders in college courses.”

  20. Complex feelings. Students are fundraising to attend SSHA conference in DC & did a 5K this a.m. I wore a sandwich board asking for donations to our Venmo account. Proud of the students & ashamed of the state of US higher ed that we actually ask for money on the street to pay for an opportunity like this. The students are all first gen & all but one is from an underrepresented group.

Done tons of #CRISPR experiments in different species of #Lepidoptera

  22. #Community is one of the major themes of our podcast. #Academia tries to silo us into buckets. The #HiddenCurriculum forces #poc #Indigenous #Black #women #firstgen #disabled scholars to compete with each other for scarce resources in the dark while making it feel like it’s our fault. We’ve benefited so much from a community of academic aunties and we hope you can too.

All this to say, we’d love to rebuild our community of #marginalized scholars that we had at the bird site over here!

  24. #introduction

I'm a staff scientist at Washington U in St Louis (#WashU #wustl #Missouri, USA), mostly working with human task fMRI datasets. I'm a big fan of #baseR and #knitr #rstats, #QC, and very extensive #supplementary materials. I insist on looking at data early and often; some #tutorials and examples on my blog. (#GotBrains?)

I'm a #FirstGen college grad, #IowaStateU; BS in #forestry. I also occasionally share cats, #knitting, and #crochet. Promoting abortion rights, not book bans.

  25. #Introduction:

    Hello #ScienceMastodon.

My name is Verena Kohler and I am a #FirstGen #scientist, currently working as independent senior #postdoc at #UniGraz in Austria.

I am interested, how age influences #proteostasis, the balance between protein production, folding and degradation, and how #ageing affects cellular #communication routes.
For that, I am using my favourite #ModelOrganism, the baker’s #yeast, a lot of #FluorescenceMicroscopy and #HighThroughput screens.

    Let’s talk #science !

  27. I hope it's not too late for my #introduction

I am an associate professor of #Psychology at the #UniversityOfWashington, proud #Immigrant and #FirstGen. I work in #CognitiveScience and #CognitiveNeuroscience and specifically in #PredictiveModels of #Memory and #DecisionMaking and #CognitiveArchitectures: I think they will play an important role in #ComputationalPsychiatry.

    Besides being a #science nerd, I love #movies (soft spot for #horror), #nature (we have #horses !) and #bicycling
