So I've been slowly making progress on my new fireplace. I got all of the stone and wood facing for the fireplace done. The black walnut slab is fully sanded and so incredibly smooth (600 grit FTW). I'm going to finish with Tung oil and then mount. After that I have to fill in the triangle space behind the slab, but that barely even counts (until it does).

Having a bit of an idle afternoon, with a rare #fireplace spark up. In our cosy nook with a book.

This morning I wanted to make a fire. Tossed a log in the fireplace. Plonk. A chunk of firebrick falls out. 😱

Plans cancelled. Took off the door plate to inspect. That brick had been missing a long time and only the final piece fell out, so not terrible but not great either considering its still the middle of a fucking 30 year winter.

Dug up my stash of refractory bricks, found one of the right size, scrubbed off the moss and put it in the oven to dry.

Luckily also had a pack of refractory mix. Did the most awkward bricklaying job ever, through a hole, brick to be inserted from the bottom hanging down, working lamp inside the burn chamber and using the selfie cam on my phone to see.

Seems to have worked, but my day is gone.

Another fireplace tip I learned from somewhere. Orange peel is excellent fire chip when dried. It needs to be completely dry and doesn’t light easy but when it does, it burns long.

Another activity I like to do on snowy days is take an egg carton, tear off the edges & top, rip these into tiny pieces & fill the cups with those pieces. Then I melt some wax on the wood stove and pour it in the cups to soak through the torn pieces. After this cools, I tear apart the cups and use them as fire starters. I do this over freezer paper so any wax that soaks through can be peeled off when solid and used next time. #recycle #reuse #repurpose #FireStarter #WoodStove #FirePlace #FirePit

I don’t know if I’m out of the loop or a genius, but if you keep stones on the ledge of your fireplace, you can use them as portable heaters when you walk around your freezer of a house. Our bathroom is cold so before I go there, I take a stone with me.

First time using the fireplace this winter 😊
After getting back from AZ, I went fishing my local creek in PA. While the temperature was still around 40°F, I was freezing, hands and feet ice-cold 🥶 big difference from fishing in AZ last week 🙃
So, drinking beer in front of the fireplace is appropriate 🔥😉
