Frelich said the swaths of woods that are burning are mostly evergreen, specifically fir and spruce that form the backbone of the boreal forest. They’ve been baked to a tinder by the dry heat wave, creating “just the right or just the wrong configuration, depending on your point of view,” he said.
“Boreal conifer fuel types are among the most flammable in the world — and among the most intense when they burn," he said in a phone interview Tuesday. “So many tons of combustible fuel per acre ... a lot of boreal forest fires simply can’t be suppressed.”
The only thing that could put out the fires quickly would be a deluge.

A #drought during the critical stages of post-fire recovery could filter individuals that perform better under water stress. This could be particularly relevant for species with a narrow post-fire establishment window that depends strongly on water availability 🔥🌱

Productive #paleofire workshop at #PennState last week - coincidentally closed with a prescribed burn near the campus in State College, PA 🔥

Following severe wildfires, fast-growing, highly flammable invasive grasses rapidly colonize denuded landscapes, acting as combustible runways that significantly elevate the risk and severity of subsequent fires.

Really enjoyed this study from Ruby Paroissien at UNSW and the Australian Plantbank, looking at seed dispersal in the wet sclerophyll forests of SE Aus following the 2019/20 disaster fire season.
They found that post-fire seed dispersal from rainforest species was almost entirely absent 😟 hugely concerning when we have begun to see some of our oldest rainforests burn.
A highlight of the paper is Ruby's hand-drawn seed illustrations!

For anyone interested in #ecology, specifically #FireEcology, here is a little #simulation I created several years ago...

It is also a good example of using a #hexagonal grid on a #web page.

#feuxdeforets #forestfire #wildfire #rechauffementclimatique #changementsclimatiques #climatechange #fireecology #firemodelling

Susie Madrak uncovers alarming concerns about the upcoming wildfire season, worsened by extreme heat and budget cuts from the Trump era. Federal fire crews warn that slashed resources hinder their ability to manage vast public lands, complicating wildfire responses. A new directive could further muddle efforts as they prepare for a potentially disastrous season. "By criminalizing fire, Spanish authorities effectively criminalized forms of #IndigenousKnowledge—like the cultivation of certain plants and management of #ecosystems—that relied on #controlledBurning. This put #Indigenous people in an impossible situation. Those who persisted with burning risked arrest and forced labor."

Dear _ ,
🔥 In the present, I can contribute to the future, where the management of #forests in Western #Canada will be based on holistic #ecological knowledge, including #Indigenous traditional methods. 🌲✨ I can 🌿 promote & advocate for: Indigenous-led land management, 🔥 prescribed burning, & #reforestation with fire-resistant spp; 🌾 policies that restore grasslands & carbon sinks; 🐴 ethical, low-impact logging; 📚 & I can learn more about forest ecology. 🌎💚 #LandBack #FireEcology #ClimateAction
