Amazon stanął w obliczu potężnego kryzysu wizerunkowego po premierze nowego modelu przystawki Fire TV Stick 4K Select.

Urządzenie, w odróżnieniu od poprzedników, działa na nowym systemie operacyjnym VegaOS, który uniemożliwia instalowanie aplikacji z zewnętrznych źródeł (tzw. sideloading). Reakcja klientów była natychmiastowa: produkt zalała fala krytyki, a firma została oskarżona o cenzurowanie recenzji.

Do tej pory wszystkie urządzenia z serii Fire TV działały w oparciu o Fire OS, czyli mocno zmodyfikowaną wersję Androida. Ich kluczową zaletą dla wielu zaawansowanych użytkowników była możliwość łatwego instalowania aplikacji spoza oficjalnego sklepu Amazon Appstore (sideloading). Pozwalało to na korzystanie z alternatywnych odtwarzaczy multimedialnych, przeglądarek czy narzędzi niedostępnych w oficjalnej dystrybucji.

Wraz z premierą modelu Fire TV Stick 4K Select, Amazon rozpoczął proces migracji na swój autorski, zamknięty system VegaOS. Jak się okazało, nowy system ma „wbudowaną” funkcję bezpieczeństwa, która całkowicie blokuje sideloading. Firma tłumaczy to „zwiększonym bezpieczeństwem”, jednak dla użytkowników jest to pozbawienie ich kluczowej funkcjonalności i próba zamknięcia ekosystemu na wzór Apple tvOS. Tyle, że o ile system Apple broni się szeroką dostępnością aplikacji w ramach oficjalnego sklepu, to tego samego nie da się powiedzieć w przypadku analogicznego rozwiązania Amazona.

Bunt konsumentów był błyskawiczny. Nowy Fire TV Stick 4K Select ma w sklepie Amazon fatalną średnią ocen na poziomie 2,8 gwiazdki (w porównaniu do 4,5+ dla modeli z Androidem). W recenzjach klienci krytykują nie tylko blokadę, ale także zauważalnie gorszą wydajność (urządzenie ma mieć o połowę mniej pamięci RAM) oraz znacznie uboższy sklep z aplikacjami dla zamkniętego systemu VegaOS.

Sytuację pogorszyły doniesienia, m.in. z serwisu AFTVNews, oskarżające Amazon o cenzurowanie i usuwanie negatywnych recenzji, które wprost wspominały o problemie z sideloadingiem. W odpowiedzi na te zarzuty Amazon stwierdził, że nie usuwał celowo żadnych zweryfikowanych opinii, a sytuacja była wynikiem „błędu”, który został już naprawiony.

Całe zamieszanie zmusiło firmę do kuriozalnego kroku. Aby odróżnić „wadliwy” model z VegaOS od „dobrego” modelu z Androidem, Amazon zmienił nazwę dotychczasowego Fire TV Stick 4K na Fire TV Stick 4K Plus. Tym samym dopisek „Plus” stał się dla kupujących sygnałem, że nabywają starsze, ale w pełni funkcjonalne urządzenie z otwartym systemem, a nie nową, zablokowaną wersję.
