Пять российских VPS на Linux: fio, sysbench и грабли

Обзоров VPS на Хабре хватает, но почти все сделаны Windows-утилитами и сводятся к тому, какой диск показал «отличный результат». Мне же нужна была батарея, которую можно прогнать по SSH на любой машине, и понимание, что конкретно означает каждое число. Второй пункт оказался неожиданно объёмным. Я трижды получал красивые результаты, которые не имели отношения к тому, что я думал измерить: скорость оперативки вместо диска, кэш гипервизора вместо носителя, конфиг лимитера вместо производительности. Каждый раз цифры выглядели совершенно правдоподобно, и я бы их спокойно опубликовал. Поэтому в этой статье: сначала стенд и методика, потом грабли по ходу замера, потом результаты. Ну и длинный список оговорок в конце.

Random read 4K, the workload databases actually live on:
1.41M IOPS on the 2025 box against 822k on the 2027 one.

RAM bandwidth: 64,038 MiB/s against 11,906. That is 5.4x.

Single thread CPU: 4,504 against 4,147 events/sec. Same EPYC Genoa on paper.

And here is my favorite part. The old box ran all of this while carrying my entire production: Mastodon, Postgres, Valkey, a pile of Docker containers, 17 days of uptime.

The new box was empty and idle.

The loaded veteran still won almost everything.

A cor Malbec do fio Barroco Multicolor Premium é belíssima. Nas fotos digitais (inclusive nas que tentei fazer) fica em tons de roxo (como se tivesse pigmentos azuis), mas não é. É vinho com marsala. Fui pessoalmente a um armarinho hoje para ter certeza da cor antes de comprar.

У дисковой подсистемы слишком хорошая репутация в тарифных таблицах и не самая однозначная в инженерных обсуждениях. В первом случае нам продают гигабайты в секунду, во втором часто говорят, что для веба диск почти не важен. Я работаю контент-маркетологом в Scalehost и по работе регулярно разбираю темы, связанные с производительностью веб-проектов. Вопрос “нужен ли сайту NVMe или это просто маркетинговая галочка” возникает так часто, что мне захотелось собрать его в один технически внятный разбор.

Kuli lepším výpisům jsem si pořídil i ten jejich Revolut Byznys abych zjistil že to mi k plně automatizovaným výpisům taky nepomůže ...

Uvažoval jsem si tedy platit ten jejich "plnotučný" tarif ale když jsem zjistil že ani tam mi pšenka nepokvete, seznal jsem, že za to, abych každou chvíli ručně stahoval výpisy, si ty prachy nezaslouží.

I've switched from #9pfs to #virtiofs mount for a VM I run under my #proxmox host at home and did a few #fio benchmarks.

9pfs (before):

seq read (1M, 1 thread) - 1950 MiB/s
rand read (4K, 4 threads) - 213 MiB/s
seq write (1M, 1 thread) - 468 MiB/s
rand write (4K, 4 threads) - 80 MiB/s

virtiofs (after):

seq read (1M, 1 thread) - 5258 MiB/s
rand read (4K, 4 threads) - 291 MiB/s
seq write (1M, 1 thread) - 1074 MiB/s
rand write (4K, 4 threads) - 84 MiB/s

2.7x sequential read, 2.3x sequential write, 1.3x random read, and 1.05x random write.

Pretty good improvements!

Especially that this is for my media (movies/tv) mount where mostly sequential I/O is typically performed.

Note the underlying hardware is Samsung QVO SATA SSD, which is rather slow SSD, and likely a bottleneck in those random read/write tests. I expect there would be much bigger differences on a fast NVMe drive.

PSA: The Metal Slug Tactics demo is out on Steam and, as with most games these days, it works perfectly out of the box on Linux.

This game has been delayed so much (announced in 2021) but it looks like it will finally be released later this year. Will probably get this on the Switch.

I tested a new ZFS pool, 6x2TB SSD Raidz3, AMD 5950X, 128GB, with fio program, results:

(Random) READ: bw=106MiB/s (111MB/s)
(Random) WRITE: bw=59.8MiB/s (62.8MB/s)
(Sequential) READ: bw=654MiB/s (686MB/s)
(Sequential) WRITE: bw=398MiB/s (417MB/s)

Tested with fio in Docker container, 16 cores
Parameters:
bs=4k
ioengine=libaio
iodepth=4
size=10g
direct=1
end_fsync=1
runtime=60

Tests with iodepth=16 or direct=0 didn't much change results. I'm satisfied with the results.
