The Finnish Väinämöinen creation story has interesting parallels in Estonian folklore. While Väinämöinen shapes the world from broken eggs, Estonian myths feature Vanapagan crafting landscapes through cosmic bargains.
Both share that distinct Finnic worldview: the world isn't given—it's built or bargained for. Makes me wonder what other parallels exist between Finnic and Baltic creation stories.

#finnishfolklore Forest cover has been considered the world of forest owners or peasants. According to the belief, you can sometimes get carried away by some creature, for example a forest owner or a magpie. On the other hand, a person can believe that he is in the forest if he gets lost and cannot find his way home from the forest on his own. It has been said that you also end up with forest cover if you step into a vicious circle, i.e. inside a circle formed by mushrooms.
A person who has fallen into forest cover has a strange, foreign feeling. Some say that the world became silent at the same time, the birdsong and other sounds of the forest stopped. A familiar forest may become strange and different, sometimes somehow grumpy, even upside down. Some of those caught in the forest are frozen in place, unable to move or speak, while others pass through a region that has become unrecognizable. It is said that someone who has fallen into the forest cover disappears from the sight of others, and others cannot find him, even if they pass by. A forest cover may also look like a stone or a stump. There are stories where a person looking for his lost cow sits exhausted on a rock, unaware that he is sitting on his cow. Some get out of the forest cover without doing anything, others after doing magic tricks, and some are said to have disappeared forever. -
At one point I was doing a few illustrations inspired by Finnish folklore.
First one is a depiction of the gate to the underworld with a swan of Tuonela. In folklore, water is associated as a divider between the realms of the living and the dead.
Second one depicts a firefox, said to be rare and precious.
Third one is Kokko or "vaakalintu", large mythical eagle, similar to thunderbird.
