  1. Similarly, Virkki notes that open and balanced historical treatment of the post-WW2 years of #finlandisation and the extent to which USSR influenced Finland has been difficult in #Finland. Largely because *every* major party *and* most of the economic elite were implicated.

  6. Seems to be much like how #finlandisation worked. It is very important to realise that much of the erosion of #democracy & corruption finlandisation caused was actually due to opportunistic local politicians and other players realising they could play the "Kremlin card" against their opponents.

  11. The note gave Kekkonen the opportunity he had sought to dissolve the Finnish Parliament, forcing his opponents to campaign together in the presidential election and against each other in the parliamentary election at the same time. This was #finlandisation in practice. Ruthless opportunism.

  16. Speaking in an interview with Reuters, #Finland's Foreign Minister Elina #Valtonen poured cold water on using the "#Finlandisation" model, pointing out that firstly #Helsinki had fended off #Russia in World War 2 and that despite the ensuing peace had always continued to arm itself fearing a new conflict.

"I'm against it (Finlandisation), yes. Let's face it, #Ukraine was neutral before they were attacked by Russia,"

  21. @richievk that could be a good start. #Finlandisation was framed as a negative thing (and in some ways it was), so we need a new, positive brand. Perhaps #Finlandification instead is the process of having had to be tied to oppressive regimes, but slowly opening up and becoming a full member of the open, democratic communities. Perhaps #Ukraine is going through that, maybe one day #Belarus will. Finally #Russia will need some Finlandification so we can all work together again.
