  1. Reminder: Besides blocking people, Simon Harris also deletes comments that pose valid and informed questions - especially when they contradict his statements in the Dáil. (59 seconds. 2. @bthalpin The history of Irish creative use of #PRSTV is a bit of a chicken-and-egg issue. To what extent did decline of #FiannaFail and #FineGael drive more creative use of #STV, and how much did clever use of STV hurt #FFFG?

I think it's actually the same phenomenon. For decades, Irish voters were mostly happy with the choice of FF or FG. Later, new political goals drove voters to new parties and new tactics.

  3. @brad This is perhaps the best description of Fine Gael that I have ever, ever read.

    Perfection. Unsurpassable. No notes. Bravo!

  4. PS in case anyone questions the closeness of #EoinDrea's ties to #FineGael, see his bio on the #MartensCentre website: martenscentre.eu/article-autho (archived at archive.is/rjN5I)

From 2020 to 2022, Drea was on the board of Fine Gael's Policy Lab.

  5. Dr #EoinDrea is a senior researcher at the #WilfriedMartensCentre, the official think tank of the #EuropeanPeopleParty (#EPP) of which #FineGael #FG is a member.

FG will probably try to disown Eoin Drea. They will says this is just a personal opinion by an academic researcher etc, that it's obviously not in any way FG's position.

That is of course #bollix. EPP staff don't go placing op-eds on highly sensitive #foreignpolicy issues without some liaison with the local EPP member party.

  6. Irish politicians represent Ireland in the #EU. But #FineGael's eurobrains tell #Ireland to shut up. 😡

Dr #EoinDrea's #IrishTimes op-ed tells Ireland to #STFU about #genocide in #Gaza, #EUmilitarization, & #IrishNeutrality. Drea calis Irish policy a "hot mess of uncoordinated gibberish".

Drea says Ireland's 2026 #EUpresidency should "focus on process, not content". In other words: No policy goals for Paddy!

#FG wants Ireland to be a servant of France & Germany. #iepol

  7. @christineburns @Wen At least the chicken was edible.

And after a spurt of headless running, the chicken did die, unlike zombie Labour.

But the biggest shock is that #FineGael is in power both in Dublin and in London, thanks to Morgan McSweeney. Who saw that one coming?

  8. Simon McGarr @Tupp_ed''s blog post about #CatherineConnolly's election win #Aras25 is short of new insight, but full of delightful #snark at the #FFFFG fustercluck. thegist.ie/the-gist-no-contest/

Also, he found the 1930s iteration of #FineGael's red scare tactics.

  9. The failue of Ireland's centre-right parties was laid bare by #Aras24. #FFFG mismanaged every aspect of their task.

Gerald Howlin says Micheál Martin is more vulnerable than Simon Harris. Harris is better than Martin at wooing his backbenchers, but is more secure because #FineGael has no plausible alternative leaders.

But #FiannaFáil does have viable alternatives. Can Micheál Martin buy time? #iepol

  10. Ireland elects a left-wing president in an anti-government landslide.

Independent Catherine Connolly won a record 63.4% of valid votes.

Heather Humphreys of the government coalition party Fine Gael finished a distant second with 29.5%. Finishing in third and last place Saturday was Jim Gavin of the largest government party, Fianna Fáil, who won barely 7% of votes.

  11. @maddler Absolutely! Even the basic electoral task of getting bodies on the ground to knock doors was a fail for them.

I followed the #FineGael machine closely on Facebook, and from town after town FG was publishing photos of only 4–8 canvassers. But the #CatherineConnolly campaign was posting photos of teams of dozens of #Aras25 #Aras2025 canvassers.

That's before we consider the intellectual tasks which they also failed.

The electoral inertia which kept them in power is draining away

  12. 11 attack pieces in the #SundayIndependent this morning.

The establishment are running scared of #CatherineConnolly in #Aras25.

Not surprising to see #EnochBurke supporting #FineGael either.

  13. #FineGael finally gets that #HeatherHumphreys needs a #miracle to have a chance of beating #CatherineConnolly. 😈 #Aras25

The best bit of the #SundayTimes report is that Humphreys will shift to a “forward-focused” message “of explaining what her vision is for the presidency”. 😂 With only 5 days to go, a pivot from smears to an unspecified "vision" is like George Bush discovering "the vision thing". 😂🤣
