Because I've been feeling quite emotional* this evening I've gone into the counselling app that was prescribed by the GP - up until now I've just gone through the motions each day, but this session has been extremely helpful in identifying some of the reasons I feel the way I do, and what tiny steps I might take on the way to resolving it.
For an AI app it's impressing me!*I suspect that there is a hormonal imbalance at play, so I'm contacting the GP yet again tomorrow. Probably nothing they can do, but at least it'll be on record.

CW: Moobs / breasts
As you might know I've developed gynaecomastia and am being reviewed by my GP on Friday as I'm getting a fair amount of discomfort and some nipple pains.
This is from a drug reaction to Finasteride. It was suggested that I try a supportive compression vest. It arrived today.
I was initially very disappointed as it felt flimsy and very thin. After an initial try-on I nearly threw it in the bin.
I've now been wearing it for a couple of hours and there's definitely an effect - I'm feeling less bounce and my profile is slightly better.
Less movement should help with some of the discomfort I hope.
It's ever so slightly exhausting in a strange way.
The biggest disappointment is because it's so lightweight my sticky-out nipples are visible from space. Tape or a padded bra?
I'll give it the benefit of the doubt for now.Sigh.

I've had a reply from the surgery. I've got a face to face appointment next Friday afternoon.
Not as soon as I'd like, but I'm not complaining because it's not urgent, and as I said, I'm not sure there's anything the GP can actually •do• except give me advice and soothing words. -
Having seen myself on the allotment wildlife (!) camera I'm not sure whether the tee shirt I'm wearing is flattering or embarrassing.

Finasteride is a drug that keeps on giving..... mostly bad stuff.
The low mood caused by Finasteride for my enlarged prostate seems to be a lot better this morning. Yay!
My wife has pointed out that I've definitely developed moobs and the area around my nipples is quite dark. Mirror confirms.
Thanks.
I'm well into A cup territory and heading for Bs.
This might explain the vague ache on both sides of my chest.
(Yes, it's a recognised side effect)While this is a novel experience at my age, I'm not welcoming it! Hopefully having stopped taking it about 10 days ago I won't be needing a visit to M&S any time soon🫣😳😆

Hello Sunday People.
The weather is forecast to be dry (!), about 24°C with a light breeze here in Leicestershire.
So, as is customary, we'll head to the allotment to see what crops are dying /see which weeds are thriving. I'll try digging some potatoes for the LOLs . There's crap to move off the second plot still.
The Site Steward may have spoken to one of my neighbours about taking that plot over, hopefully I'll see one of them.I'm still feeling very down - lack of interest in doing much and less motivation to do it. But it's getting done by habit, routine and rote. I know - or hope - that once this drug (Finesteride) is out of my system then things should return back to some sort of normal (complete with prostate symptoms). I just wish I could speed it up because I hate feeling like this.
Have a good Sunday everyone.

I'm back from the GP.
Sent an online form to the #NHS surgery at 08:50 today, at 09:20 I got a text with an appointment at 10:30. Went in to see the GP at 10:20. Can't fault that.
He was absolutely convinced that the low mood I've been experiencing, alongside the occasional nightmares, and slightly odd behaviour, are all due to the Finesteride I was prescribed for my enlarged prostate.
He implied that I shouldn't have been prescribed it because of my history of depression.
He agreed that I'm right to stop taking it, but the mood issues may not resolve quickly.
I'm waiting for a referral to a Urologist now.
Result!

CW: Mental Health
I wrote the other day that i think the #Finasteride tablets for my prostate are making me depressed.
Well, something is.
I've stopped taking themPlus I've realised that I've made some odd, impulsive decisions and purchases.
This isn't like me.I am increasingly feeling like I'm wading through treacle. No energy to sustain anything constructive.
I'm definitely contacting the GP tomorrow.

I've decided to stop talking my Finesteride medication which was prescribed for my enlarged prostate. I'll contact the GP on Monday.
I've noticed my mood going downhill this week, and depression is a side effect of this stuff that gets serious warnings (that I shrugged off).I guess I'm out of medical options and it'll be a long wait for a Urologist appointment.

#GiftLink: "#Finasteride might be the ultimate drug for a generation of young men who have never been more focused on optimizing their #looks — and yet have never been less connected, romantically or socially. #Socialmedia not only feeds men self-improvement content on their phones but also encourages them to curate images of themselves for others to scrutinize.
Psychologists have known for years that women who are especially preoccupied with their #physicalappearance tend to have more difficulty with anxiety and #sexualsatisfaction. “Women have had this kind of thing to deal with for so many years,” said Ryan, one of the friends in Elliot Connors’s group chat. “While it’s awful that this is now happening to men, there is also a kind of a poetic justice to it.”"

This is a terrifying story from #GQ about #finasteride , a drug prescribed for hair loss that has insane side effects that aren’t on the warning label, and should be.
As an aside, I know the pressure on men to be attractive, while not the universal standard applied to women, is still a nightmarish set of expectations, set by unrealistic humans.
And while I would not presume to speak for all women, I can tell you that as a discerning woman, were I picking escorts for the orgy, the smoothness of pate would not be a deciding factor. (Let us bow our heads in appreciation of Madeline Khan. Yes, yes, yes, no, no, no, YES!)
#Bald is sexy as fuck when people own it. Don’t let snake oil salesmen tell you any different.

#Finasteride may be the best kept secret of #endochrinology. Literally blocks the young-man hormones from becoming the old-man hormones.

An analytical review of eight studies of the association between the hair loss drug finasteride and neuropsychiatric side effects concludes that there is strong evidence for causality, with consequences including depression and suicide.

I think Finasteride is a pretty cool drug. It makes your body-hair fall out and doesn't afraid of anything.
-
Go for it guys.
Be something you're not.

Earlier I got an ad for chewable #minoxidil and #finasteride from a well-known hair loss prevention company that only markets toward men, completely ignoring everyone else that could benefit. I wonder how that would taste, probably not very good unless it's cherry or grape flavored like children's #Tylenol or something. Wonder why they're doing chewable minoxidil too, that's usually for heart stuff.

There is this talk about #depression resulting from the use of 5α-reductase inhibitors (aka #Finasteride and #Dutasteride), which is of course a serious concern, but the studies that DIYHRT.market links are both about the use by #cis men not about the use by #trans women, which makes me question to what extend the results are applicable to us:
“ The findings support a growing impression that finasteride is associated with adverse psychiatric effects that can persist in association with sexual dysfunction after discontinuing finasteride treatment. ” — https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33814544/
I mean: If the reason for depression is a reduction in sexual function, than I wonder whether this is just a case of #cissies wanting to top in penetrative sex or are unhappy about a low sex-drive, the former of which is at least for me not really all that much of a concern, whereas the later is a feature… And I figure there might be quite a few other #transfem s sharing those sentiments…

I find it really funny that my finasteride is made by Hetero Labs Limited, because I'm not.

Just had my third appointment with psytrans (my gender-clinic) and it seems that the likely thing is that I may end up with a diagnosis from them by the 2nd of February. They will then refer me to an independent psychologist who has to confirm that which may involve another month of waiting for an appointment. After that we would look for a hospital to start #HRT…
So in short this sounds like there’ll be about two more months until I can start HRT officially. 😊︎
On the other hand #GenderGP should now send me a prescription for #Finasteride and #Estrogen any day now, so if that works I could start a bit early… 😈

Anyone wondering if #finasteride works for #hairloss .. it definitely does for me! I still have the same long hair I have in my pfp here (longer now) .. if I tie that in a ponytail this is how much new, short hair I have currently.. (10 months on fin) My hairline has moved forwards a couple of cm, and is still filling out further around the temples. Was definitely worth trying.
My hair never used to be curly though, so that’s new. 😆

1/ The prescription drug #Vioxx, indicated mainly for arthritis, was withdrawn from the market in 2004 due to how it induced cardiovascular events in many patients. A few years before that, the “miracle” diet drug Fen-phen was pulled because of some devastating side effects, too.
Ever since then I’ve wondered about what other risky drugs are still out there and available. One I’ve thought about is #finasteride, marketed as Proscar and Propecia and now trivially available via startups like Hims.

They should have called it minasteride so you can take finasteride with minasteride

I should just start taking estrogen to alleviate/repair my baldness cause TIL that is one effect. But I don't get then how finasteride comes into play... :blobcatthink:
