So I gutted my way through FFX, and it was in fact a real slog. An enjoyable slog (is that a thing?), but it is a really heavy, slow game. Absolute banger nü-metal intro song. Last time I played it I was a forlorn college student. X-2 came out while I still had access to a PS2 but I passed on it, it seemed goofy. But!...
Actually I'm really digging X-2. If FFX was intentional, methodical, a meditation on death with a water-polo minigame, soaring instrumentals punctuated by metal, then X-2 is entirely the opposite. I heard it described as Final Fantasy: Charlie's Angels, and well, not wrong! But there's nothing bad about a fun adventure with a banger J-Pop intro song (and sequence), a gambling minigame, and heist movie music and aesthetics.
All this to say, sucks that I was a chauvinist hater back then, this game owns.

I think I'm starting to get the FFX-2 battle system kinda. Switched the dressphere change animation to not play for subsequent switches as suggested on a forum but I'm not far enough for that to be in effect for everything yet. The Black Mage costume looks super cool, but it's not the most useful since at least at first it's only magic and I think has no techniques like Steal yet. The reduced encounter rate is very welcome as one place had way too many in X.

I've just realized something: FFX-2's airship theme gives off Xenosaga 2's "first area you can run around in without battles" theme vibes.

While I can see the ways the Final Fantasy X-2 battle system is good with the in-battle class-changing, it would be nice if there was an even slower option since I got used to thinking about almost every battle in FFX.
