In 1970 Mark Frechette was discovered by a casting director while in the middle of a shouting match at a Charles Street bus-stop in Boston. "He's 20 and he hates", she told director Michelangelo Antonioni. The director immediately cast Frechette for his counterculture film Zabrinskie Point
Despite the film being a flop Frechette + co-star Daria Halprin became symbols of the disillusioned youth of America, appearing on the covers of Look + Rolling Stone + appearing on talk shows.
In 1973, Frechette + 2 members of Lyman's Fort Hill Commune in Roxbury attempted to rob the New England Merchant's Bank. One of the trio was killed by police while the other 2 were arrested. Frechette was sentenced to 6 to 15 years in prison where he died in 1975 in a weightlifting accident after a 150-pound barbell fell on his neck + he suttocated. He was 27.

The movie, based on the a songwriter + aspiring singer in the mid 60s (think Carole King) required an innocence + vulnerability that Mitchell no longer felt she could offer.
Enter Nietzsche, Joni's cat, also known as Man From Mars ("he's a little lavender lion who looks like an alien + walks on his hind legs"). Nietzsche had peed all over a couple of chairs + so Joni said to him, “if you're going to act like an animal - you're going to live like an animal.”, grabbing him + kicking him outside. Well, he disappeared for 18 days. Night after night, Mitchell called him from her yard + waited.
