@jannem If possible, I try to use #OpenSource software. The OpticFilm 7300 + Skanlite gives me 7200 dpi, which is plenty. Scratches and dust removal would be nice, though—I'm not sure if my scanner supports that.

And the whole open vs. closed source aside, Vuescan would have cost more than what I paid for the scanner. I'd rather invest the money I've saved in new films. 😁

Как я сканирую негативы?
В принципе, ничего сложного тут нет, но чтобы к нему прийти, понадобилось примерно полгода.
Мой setup таков.
1. Карбоновая стойка со струбциной для крепления на столе.
2. Clamp для крепления камеры на стойке. Это жёсткий зажим, без прокладок.
3. Камера, Canon 6d и старый мануальный макро объектив Nikkor macro 55mm f3.5 с экстендером, который позволяет снимать 35мм негативы 1:1 на full-frame камере.
Да, я знаю, что для подобной работы для лучшей линености лучше подойдёт aps-c камера. Я ищу что-то подобное на вторично рынке, но мне пока ещё жаль отдать около 200+€ за б/у Nikon D5500 для этой цели.
4. Кнопка спуска, чтобы не сотрясать камеру.

Теперь, самое интересное - держатель для пленки. Ранее я использовал слегка доработанное устройство JJC, установленное на фото рельсу. Но равномерность света оставляла желать лучшего. Поэтому я решил пойти другим путем. Заказал у английских энтузиастов набор шаблонов для 6x9 и для 35мм пленки. Это известный в фотокомьюнити набор Essential Film Holder.
Довольно бюджетно и качественно, если бы не пришлось платить таможенную пошлину и ждать три(!) месяца, пока они вырежут из пластика несколько простых деталей и отправят это по почте...
Затем я приобрел недорогой источник света Viltrox на AliExpress и распечатал на 3d принтере держатель для него.

В принципе, я доволен результатом. Свет уже равномерный по кадру, сканировать на этом столике гораздо быстрее, чем на JJC. Особенно это ощутимо, когда нужно снять пару сотен негативов. Единственное, что непросто - это первоначальная настройка резкости. Жёсткость стойки, зажима и крепления камеры не идеальны. Но минут за десять это делается.

Собрал столик для сканирования пленки. Карбоновая стойка, clamp с головой для камеры. Известный набор шаблонов с диффузором Essential Film Holder, источник света Viltrox, отпечатанный на 3d принтере держатель для всего этого. Вроде, получилось довольно сносно и удобно. Ждите результатов сканирования.

Finally, I've got my latest films developed and scanned. I disassembled my scanning rig in hope to get soon EFH (The Essential Film Holder #essential_film_holder), but it took 3 months to perform simple laser cut on plastics and ship it with Royal mail... What can I say? EFH is a good thing, but 3 months to wait is way too long. Too long. From the other hand, I still cannot use my copying stand with it because of not having enough hight. So, finally I assembled back my old good scanning rail and copied all 150 negatives 😅.

One thing makes me happy is that cheap #fomapan #fomapan100 film. I run out of my previous developer Fx-39 #fx39 and bought that new for me - HC-110 #hc110, a German-made replica of original Kodak developer. And other great thing was to shoot 100 film at ISO64 and develop at dilution 63:1. This gave me fantastic contrast and negative density I like so much. I bought bulk roll of fomapan 100, happy with it so far.

Suppose someone had a big old box full of mostly 35mm monochrome negative with a sprinkling of 4x5 negs as well (also monochome) and they wanted to get them bulk scanned with an eye to making some large prints of a few.

Around a year ago I did an oopsie and nuked a bunch of my film scans as I was setting up a backup for them. So then later I got them re-scanned and the results weren't great, the weird spot from the first image persits through all of the scans. Found one of the original scans, so here's a comparison:
Don't have tons of free time right now, but can't wait to re-re-scan these

Working on setting up a film scanning setup that utilizes my dslr. Tested out which lens I should use for this and if I can use open source software to process the negatives. Everything looks fine so far.

I scanned the same photo 3 different ways.

1. Fuji Frontier
2. Nikon Coolscan 8000 ED with VueScan + NLP
3. Nikon Coolscan 8000 ED with VueScan color inversion for Kodak Portra setting

Pros and cons to each type of scanning.

Once I get NikonScan working, I will compare that as well.

Right now my 2 main fave ways to scan are with Fuji Frontier (I rent it at a darkroom) or with my CoolScan with VueScan and NLP.

I think I finally found the perfect use-case for pixel-shift super-resolution: scanning film.

✓ Subject is immobile, so no motion artifacts
✓ On a 24MP sensor, most film grain is larger than sensor noise after merging, so sensor noise essentially vanishes once downscaled

Here's two scans of the same frame, first done on the lab using a Noritsu professional scanner, and the second done using my Nikon Z6 III pixel-shift mode, then downscaled.

Who do you use or if you scan yourself what do you do, for scanning 35mm photography film?
I prev used local mom & pop shop but their scanner is pretty old & noisy and they charge way too much for barely higher res. They also cropped more than expected on some frames for some reason, and didn’t do good job on dust removal either 🙄
I also have a flatbed scanner, but it’s so slow! Also tried macro lens+film holder+light, post processing way too fiddly.
