I've been questioning and criticizing generative AI here for 4 years, and I feel slightly vindicated that many people have come around to share my point of view. (If anything, I now feel my initial reactions were too generous in hindsight...)

Today, I'm happy to see more people speaking out against the exploitation of the intellectual labor of the creative working class. It feels like the pendulum is now swinging the other way, and that the honeymoon period for AI is not only over, but that opinions have started to shift strongly against it.

Real issues surrounding labor, creativity, economics and the environment are finally becoming more clear to the average person. People are no longer being blinded by an endless cycle of hype and marketing. We now increasingly know how the sausage is made, and people are now asking the right questions and raising the right concerns.

Still, not enough has changed.

The fight against AI exploitation continues.

With my new small business, I have set a strict "No AI" policy on all aspects of my work and operations.

I'm also trying to make a mark of difference on my meticulous inspection of records in what are often absurdly bad records systems to provide as complete a picture of the situation at the subject property as possible.

The output is a PDF (often hundreds of pages long) with my summary of key facts and commentary at the start.

I'm not interested in setting a password on the PDFs as that adds another layer of complexity in an already complex interaction with the data for the client and I'm not confident that the passwords aren't able to be subverted anyway.

On that basis, I'm watermarking my reports to detect others piggybacking off my records compilation, but I also want to try, if possible, to prevent (or at least minimise) genAIs processing or reviewing my reports.

However, I do need to allow the reports to be as text-searchable as possible for clients, so can't do "Captcha-style" degradation after converting text to images, either.

There are, I believe, businesses soliciting for copies of reports to process through Ai to feed into their own melange of information, with, I think, a view to undercut or remove demand for "human made" reports – and/or to prop up with no effort the veracity of that melange.

While their risk profile in using AI in this field is of little concern to me, I don't want to help them reduce their risk profile or make their job easier, either.

I'd rather lose a little time answering questions directly than have clients relying on AI, too.

So, what's the state of "anti AI" watermarks in PDFs these days? Are they effective in blocking AI review?

Can I make some/most/all AIs spit out a limerick about the dangers of stealing others' hard work?

Can I get them to not provide useful output?

Can I get them to ignore things, conflate things, inflate things?

Within the post I explain what iocaine is, how it's related to AI and LLMs and of course why I use it to fight AI/LLM companies and to poison their crawlers and training sets.

Using, configuring and watching iocaine was also a way for me to shifting my dystopic/pessimistic thoughts :blobcat_thisisfine: into fun and joy :ablobcatattention:

And yes, I hate AI and LLMs and yes, I'm really fine by becoming an obsolete developer by not using it :ablobcatheart:

If #OpenAI & Co. make us humans increasingly superfluous because #AI takes over creativity and jobs, what are we still needed for? How are more and more people without work supposed to satisfy the #greed of #business and shareholders?

It is obvious that the concept has not been thought through and our destructive nature has been/is being ignored because the addiction to #profit and #power denies any responsibility.
