The earliest recorded rhyme, from 1742, is reproduced below alongside one bearing similarities to most Guy Fawkes Night ditties, recorded in 1903 at Charlton on Otmoor:

'Twas Gunpowder Treason Day,

The Gunpowder treason and plot -
Remember, remember, the 5th of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
In the past twenty years or so this poem has gotten connected to and celebrated in the masterpiece V FOR VENDETTA written by Alan Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd. It truly is one of the greatest graphic novels ever created.
If you've never read the book or have only seen the very good film version I highly recommend it. It is brilliant.
