  1. A quotation from Doctor Who

THE DOCTOR: Which is the quickest way out of here?
(Each of the women at the fountain point in different directions.)
THE DOCTOR: Yes, well, that’s democracy for you. Come on.

Doctor Who (1963–1989) British science fiction television series, original run (BBC)
    19×01 “Castrovalva,” Part 3 (1982-01-11) [w. Christopher H. Bidmead]

  2. Part 4 of the opening serial of #DoctorWho’s 1982 season closes like a space-time trap, with thrills intellectual and visceral. A few spoiler-lite observations on these episodes:
    • #AnthonyAinley never fails to delight, chewing the (excellent) scenery — yet convincing us #theMaster A) would do ALL THIS out of hate and B) is round the twist.
    • #SarahSutton grabs the few chances the script offers to portray #Nyssa’s grief and HER reasons for hating HIM.
    • The map scene is 🤯genius.
    • Scares are a big part of #DrWho’s appeal, but here an electrocution is well handled off-screen, while REAL horror is finding out (#BladeRunner style) you’re not what you thought you were…
    • The Portreeve’s tapestry, alone in the #MCEscher-inspired #Castrovalva, instead evokes #HenriRousseau.
    • The descriptor “ideal community” is either an early example of TM #FifthDoctor sarcasm, or he’s been too busy to notice its overbearing patriarchy — a clue to its origins!
    • Celery is, though, “definitely civilisation!”

  3. Observations on a rewatch of #Castrovalva.

That’s the 1982 #DoctorWho serial which kicked off the #FifthDoctor’s classic era, not the artwork by #MCEscher — though more on how HE inspired this story later.
    • Part 1 is staggeringly slow and free of incident, compared to the hectic pace of new-Who from 2005. There are only the 4 regulars, the villain and one other speaking character; it’s stagey, often static and a little staid. BUT I love it!
    • Scares — the Master needlessly electrocutes half a dozen bystanders, and the opening regeneration is creepy as.
    • Foreshadowing in the writing — Teagan and Nyssa discuss ‘recursion’ seemingly at random, while the Master observes: “These simulated projections are real enough to have a will of their own”!
    • The new Doctor is captivating — #PeterDavison ranges from odd, via impersonations of #WilliamHartnell and #PatrickTroughton, to stepping stirringly into his own character upon crossing the threshold of the Zero Room.

I’ll be back after Part 2

  4. Rewatched a 1982 #DoctorWho today, Black Orchid.
    🥀
What a perfect little #FifthDoctor story!
    😃
So many charming character moments, from Adric stuffing his face at the buffet to Aussie Teagan loving the cricket match just as much as the Doctor does.
    🏏
Then there’s cocktails and fancy-dress with Nyssa’s double. And her and Teagan gleefully dancing the Charleston…
    🍸
Just a bit of a shame about the four horrific deaths and the disfigured maniac, really! But that’s #DrWho!
    😆

  5. A quotation from Christopher Bidmead

THE DOCTOR: Oh, marvelous. You’re going to kill me. What a finely-tuned response to the situation.

Christopher H. Bidmead (1941-2025) English screenwriter, script editor, journalist
    Doctor Who (1963), 21×03 “Frontios,” Part 2 (1984-01-27)

  6. Extremely funny plot beat in Arc of Infinity where the Doctor can't easily track down Tegan in Amsterdam because he doesn't have any change for the payphone, so they just have to wander around asking for her at every hostel.

  7. Black Orchid does a great gag where the Doctor and co run up to where they parked the TARDIS and - gasp - it's gone. Oh no, what could've happened, where could-- obviously it's at the nearest police station because you can't just leave that thing sitting around on a train station platform, dumbass. You fool. You clown.

  8. Watched Black Orchid, a fun fluff story set in the 20s with no aliens or anything, just a goofy, outdated melodramatic murder mystery where the Fifth Doctor finally gets to put his cricket outfit to use, before spending the rest of the story in a clown costume, Nyssa has an unexplained doppelgänger, and Tegan gets really excited about dancing the Charleston. I like the Fifth Doctor more and more every story I watch of his.

  9. I know some people don't like it, but Enlightenment is one of my favorite Doctor Who stories.

  10. We've been watching the #FifthDoctor's era since the start of the year, and as much-maligned as 80s #DoctorWho was, I am constantly in awe of the spaceship design. These were the years following #StarWars and #Alien and you can see the aesthetic change in TV production design, from #FlyingSaucers and #Rocketships to industrial-looking #Military and #SpaceJockey craft

Here are a few of my favourites:
