Another wander back to 2012 and the SIPEXII expedition. At the last sampling site (unplanned, we were stuck) - we had a visit from a Minke whale!
It decided to expand a hole that a seal made the day before - in ice about 10cm thick and not quite solidly frozen - for some room to breathe. The whale hung around for quite a while, returning to this spot to grab air.
It was .. very spectacular.

#FieldworkFriday: Sometimes the smallest finds tell the biggest stories. 🏺
Douglass et al. explore how sparse artifact scatters can reveal long-term patterns of land use. Using cases from Australia and the US, they show why documenting every the find is key.

#FieldworkFriday: Reconnecting families with ancestral homes. 🏔️🏠
Cheng shares collaborative work with Bunun communities in Taiwan. By combining roots-seeking trips with lidar, researchers and descendants documented former settlements in the Lakulaku River Basin. 🏺

It’s an exciting #FieldworkFriday for me today — I’m travelling from -2 °C snow in Denmark to 22 °C in Najaf, #Iraq!
Together with my colleagues Tobias Richter from Copenhagen and Jaafar Jotheri from Al Qadisiyah University, I’ll be scouting out potential sites for future fieldwork as part of #AEGIS (https://aegisearth.bio). It’s my first time in Iraq so I cannot wait to finally see all the places I’ve been reading about since I was student!

On this #FieldworkFriday here's a look at a Dust^2 team as they near the end of a day in the field.
Take a deeper trip into the field with Cluster member Jeff Munroe in our video series called The Collectors Tour: https://bit.ly/CollectorsTourPlaylist

In this stop along the Collectors Tour Jeff answers the question: what happens when it snows?

In October, 2024 Jeff Munroe (Middlebury College) spent nearly three weeks traveling to 20 mineral dust collectors deployed on mountain summits in the southwestern United States for the DUST^2 Project, part of the Critical Zone Collaborative Network. This short film documents the majestic landscapes in which the collectors are located, and provides a sense of what it’s like to conduct such a long stretch of solo fieldwork.

On this #FieldworkFriday stop by Dust 18 and see what's happening.
Hint: it's collecting dust samples.

#FieldworkFriday last week I visited the exciting Early Neolithic site Eilsleben in 🇩🇪 where the university of Halle is excavating. In the '80s they dug here and found the remains of farmhouses, animals, humans, and even a mask made from a human skull 😬
The Linear Pottery culture, dated to ca 5500-4800 BCE, which this site belongs to, seem pretty macabre to us today. But oh so cool too! I'm very excited to be collaborating on this project in the years to come 🤩

Time for a #FridayFieldPhoto because it's #FieldWorkFriday
(Or perhaps a #FieldPhotoFriday entry)
More #DogSled on #SeaIce in Northern #Greenland from the spring this year..
Today I'm posting a tiny video as I've been working with some students on the data we collected this year.

Yes. These are big marbles frozen in the shape of the collector trough. Inside that ice coating the marbles is the #dust that's part of our #SourceToSink research as part of the #CriticalZone Collaborative Network.
More about this instrument, the array of passive dust collectors we maintain, and beautiful views of #Utah and #Nevada in our video series The Collectors Tour: https://bit.ly/CollectorsTourPlaylist

Dust 6 Has been added to The Collectors Tour playlist.

Surveying stream beds (and trash) earlier this week. I can’t wait to see how the surveys compare to the ones we did last summer, because my eyes tell me there were some changes at most of our sites. #FieldWorkFriday #FieldPhotoFriday #urbanStream #TrashyStreams

Very very happy to see this shopping cart and gravel bar in the stream today. Last summer the cart was there, but the gravel bar was not. Did our trail camera capture the bar being built? We’ll find out when we analyze the photos we downloaded today! #FieldPhotoFriday #FieldWorkFriday #FieldWork #Geomorphology #GravelBar #trashyStreams #ChannelChange #UrbanStreams #Cleveland

I'm in the office today, but yesterday marked my first exploration of #BurlingtonVT's #urban #streams. I got to explore two very different small small streams, both affected by #stormwater #runoff, but only one with clear evidence of active #beavers. Looking forward to doing #research here! #FieldworkFriday #FieldPhotoFriday

Because I haven't had the time/energy to be very active online lately, so today I will combine #FridayFieldWorkPhoto with some bird photography. On research vessels, we are frequently visited by birds loooking for a resting spot or possibly mistaking us for fishing vessels. I love these opportunities to observe birds on the open sea especially when the conditions are as beautiful as on this calm day with the fulmars on the Skagerak.

Throwback to a small expedition to the Dachstein Mountains (Austrian #Alps) this September! Together with @Iza_bai and great students we obtained sediment and water samples from a small glacial lake at 2060 m a.s.l. - the first analyses with the new material are already in full swing!

Gorgeous field site in Iceland where we sampled veins of calcite, prehnite, epidote, chlorite, and zeolites to study hydrothermal alteration of basaltic rocks as an analog for Mars.

Found this photo while cleaning my office. Me sampling Eau Claire Fm sandstone circa 1992. Perfect for #FieldworkFriday #FieldPhotoFriday and #ThrowbackThursday.

Going way back for today’s #FieldworkFriday. Here’s me and my eldest child doing field work downstream of Elliot Glacier on Mt. Hood, #Oregon. Our project focused on how #climatechange was affecting #streamflow from catchments with #glaciers. But a Debris Flow made a mess of one our sites! Rain on snow & ice sitting on unstable weathered volcanic rock produced pretty spectacular #geomorphology in action.

I meant to post more this week but all of a sudden it's Friday again already... time for some fieldwork photos. This time less clean work with a lot of mud coming from over 6000m water depth of the North Atlantic. During expedition MSM96, I measured profiles of dissolved oxygen concentrations in cores from the surface sediment. The more organic material settles from the surface, the more oxygen gets consumed in the sediment.
