William Sherriff sailed from Scotland in 1839 and named his Morphett Vale farm Dunglass, after the Haddingtonshire estate he had left behind. He helped found the district's first council, and today a road at Lonsdale and a stone ruin carry the family name.

The foundation stone of St Philip & St James Anglican Church, Noarlunga, was laid by Bishop Short on 26 July 1850. The Rev. E.K. Miller served the Aldinga–Noarlunga–Willunga parish for 29 years without missing a service — his parishioners gifted him a buggy for the trouble. The church closed in 2019 and is now privately owned.

William eventually sold up and returned to England, passing the property to his son Charles. The old inn fell into ruin and was later demolished.

Better road and rail links south of Adelaide soon brought tourists flocking to the coast. Before long, holiday cottages and shacks were springing up on Witton Bluff and down onto the beach itself.

The Crown Inn was among Reynella's first buildings when John Reynell opened the land for allotments in 1854. Robert Hay, previously of the Victoria Hotel at Tapley's Hill, established the inn the following year. Hay died on 20 January 1862, after which the hotel passed through many hands. Opposite the old horse changing station, it was a natural stop for coaches heading south and a gathering place for locals.
