A USB meter that measures voltage and current is a useful piece of test equipment. I have a couple of them. This Klein tester is the one I prefer.
The USB Specification calls for a device to operate correctly with a voltage between 4.75V and 5.25V. This is the operating voltage range. Transient voltages (for example, when you plug the USB device in) may be higher or lower.
Maximum allowable current for “typical” USB devices like a webcam or flash drive is 500mA. The 2TB external USB drive being measured in the picture is drawing 0.20A, or 200mA. This particular Klein meter is capable of handling up to 3A (3,000mA) of current, so inrush current when you plug the device in is no problem.
SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT USB-A and USB-C DEVICES
This tester is meant for USB-A devices. I’ve used it successfully with USB-C devices, but if you do that you have to keep in mind that its maximum current limit is 3 amps. As you can imagine, if you plugged that little tester into the USB-C charging cord on a laptop, the charging current could exceed its 3 amp limit and burn up the test meter in half a second! On the other hand, it works fine to measure the voltage and current on a little flash drive that has a USB-C connector, because that will operate at less than 500mA.THE TWO MOST COMMON PROBLEMS
Here are examples of the two most common scenarios where a USB meter will give you the information you need to fix the problem.Case #1: The more devices you plug into a USB hub, the lower the supply voltage drops. It might be 5.1V with no devices plugged in, 5.02V with one device plugged in, and 4.8V with four devices plugged in. If you plug in more devices, or start daisy-chaining USB hubs, the source voltage might drop below the 4.75V minimum. This can result in intermittent performance, or one or more devices may completely stop working.
Case #2: The power supply in the powered USB hub or in the computer becomes defective, and the voltage is less than 4.75 volts even with no devices connected.
