  1. Weekly output: Google I/O teaser, satellite-to-phone services, passkeys, connected-home considerations, Matter

I’m spending a few days in cooler confines–Monday morning, I head to Vancouver for the second year of Web Summit’s conference there. And just like last year, I won’t have enough time to do much wandering around British Columbia’s largest city and taking in its stunningly beautiful mountains-and-sea scenery, because I have three panels to moderate over Tuesday and Wednesday (with the conference hosts paying for my hotel and reimbursing my airfare).

5/5/2026: Google Teases I/O Pregame Event. How to Watch ‘The Android Show’ on May 12, PCMag

This was one of the shortest posts I’ve written for PCMag, owing to the paucity of information in the brief teaser video Google published.

5/7/2026: FCC Chair: Starlink Isn’t Enough. We Need at Least 3 Satellite-to-Phone Services, PCMag

I spent Wednesday afternoon at the wireless trade group CTIA’s annual summit in Washington. Most of the talks on the program didn’t yield anything too newsworthy, but Federal Communications Commission chair Brendan Carr’s appearance met that bar even though he didn’t talk about his clumsy attempts to leverage the FCC’s broadcast licensing authority to punish TV shows and TV hosts for being mean to Republicans.

5/7/2026: Passkey-Adoption Report Finds Many Orgs Don’t Know How to Quit Passwords, PCMag

I had an advance copy of this FIDO Alliance survey but didn’t have time to write it up in advance; fortunately, Thursday did have enough idle time for me to get this post written and filed.

5/8/2026: Smart Homes In Practice: Bridging Design, Integration, And Market Promises With Real Human-Centered Living Outcomes, Smarter Infrastructure Summit

I had a brief trip to Chicago–well, its suburb Rosemont–for this small conference. I was a late addition to this panel, in which moderator Lisa An Wong quizzed me and architect Stephen Yas and connect-home integrator Corey Ardell about ways to get homes and the appliances in them thoughtfully wired.

5/9/2026: Matter Smart Home Standard Still Looks Immaterial At Retail, Smarter Infrastructure Summit

The title of this talk I did mirrors the story I did for PCMag almost three years ago; that post caught the attention of the conference organizers, and the chance to revisit the topic and get in some practice with doing a solo presentation led me to accept their travel-expenses-covered invitation.

  2. ICYMI: FIDO Alliance forms working groups to lock down AI agent payments: FIDO Alliance launches two working groups to define open standards for AI agent authentication and agentic payments, targeting a market at $5 trillion by 2030. ppc.land/fido-alliance-forms-w #FIDOAlliance #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #AgentPayments #Authentication

  3. As #DigitalIdentity ecosystems scale globally, having strong, independent, and internationally recognized conformance test programs for #Standards is essential for #interoperability and #trust across jurisdictions and implementations.

  4. How can Amazon be part of the Fido Alliance yet implement FIDO2's WebAuthn so poorly, with the exception of AWS? Using a username and password or a passkey and 2FA via OTP only is the opposite of a correct implementation.

The whole thing feels a bit forced and not quite right. For months now. Nothing's changed about the process.

Or am I missing something here?

  6. Weekly output: Boom Supersonic’s XB-1, Comcast low latency, painstaking passkey progress

This has been a strange, sad and shocking week in the nation’s capital–first the mid-air collision outside National Airport Wednesday that left 67 people dead and ended a nearly 16-year streak without fatal crashes by U.S. airlines, then Elon Musk’s attempts to stage what I have to call a digital coup at the Treasury Department and the Agency for International Development.

Patreon readers got an extra post this week: my annual breakdown of last year’s income according to the business models of my freelance clients.

1/28/2025: Boom Supersonic’s XB-1 Testbed Plane Breaks the Sound Barrier, PCMag

Having Boom bump this test flight from Monday to Tuesday gave me a little extra time to check two descriptions of the XB-1: “independently developed” (Boom did this without government dollars or direction, unlike the Northrop F-20 fighter that was built with private money but was based on the earlier, taxpayer-funded F-5, and which that company developed at the request of the Pentagon) and “exceed Mach 1” (XB-1 sustained that achievement in level flight, unlike the Bombardier business-jet prototype that cracked the sound barrier in shallow dives in 2021).

1/29/2025: Comcast Upgrade Promises Ultra-Low Lag Xfinity Internet for Video Calls, VR, Games, PCMag

Comcast’s announcement of this new feature was shockingly short on details, but a company publicist was willing to answer e-mail after e-mail as I realized the data points I needed to write this post.

2/1/2025: The Passkey Future Is Here, But Some Companies Still Make It Too Complicated, PCMag

A year after I interviewed FIDO Alliance CEO Andrew Shikiar at a conference in D.C. about identity and authentication, I sat down with him at the 2025 version of this conference to discuss what the industry had and had not accomplished since January.

  7. Passkeys are the future of online security, and now the FIDO Alliance is making it easier to transfer them between password managers. Has your business switched to passkeys yet?

  8. A biometrics news website called Biometric Updates published an article yesterday about a recent FIDO Alliance webinar that I and @chrisanderson appeared on! We talked about achieving end-to-end passwordless with digital credentials, passkeys, and device-bound session token protections:

I'm over the moon this morning that someone was inspired enough by what we had to say to take the time to write about it!

    Happy Thursday, everyone 🤩

  9. 1Password will bei Passkey-Implementierung helfen
1Password hat ein neues Werkzeug eingeführt, das Entwickler:innen hilft zu bestimmen, ob ihre Benutzer:innen bereit sind, herkömmliche Passwörter durch die sicherere Passkey-Technologie zu ersetzen.

  11. I’m headed across the Atlantic for the first time this year–to Vilnius, Lithuania, where I’m moderating a panel on AI in finance at the Fintech Day 2024 conference. In the bargain, my hosts are covering most of my travel expenses and also have set up a series of meetings with local fintech startups. I hope that some of these conversations will help me understand why international SWIFT payments can be anything but swift.

1/31/2024: TikTok Use Soars, X Slumps, But an Old Favorite Dominates Social Media, PCMag

I got an advance copy of the Pew Research Center’s latest findings on how many Americans have ever used major social-media platforms–as opposed to how often they use them regularly. The Pew report included some interesting details about the dollar-bill incentives Pew’s survey firm used to coax people to answer survey invitations sent in the mail, so I used the last paragraph to enlighten readers about them.

2/1/2024: Passkeys Are Here: We Just Have to Convince People to Use Them, PCMag

I covered the Identity, Authentication, and the Road Ahead Policy Forum in D.C. two Thursdays ago and had an enlightening conversation there with FIDO Alliance executive director Andrew Shikiar. Turning that interview into a story took a few more days, in part because of my own subpar time management and in part because of what became a fruitless effort to get more details about the Air New Zealand rollout of passkeys that Shikiar had cited in his keynote and in our conversation.

2/2/2024: Comcast Agrees to Back Off ’10G’ Branding a Little, PCMag

I thought this would be a simple story to write, but grasping the difference between “Xfinity 10G Network,” which Comcast says it won’t use in its marketin, and “Xfinity 10G” required a call and follow-up e-mail thread with a Comcast publication. And then understanding Comcast’s definition of 10-gigabit availability required some time browsing through its customer-support forums.

  12. I started off this morning reading the #FIDOalliance 's whitepaper on multi-device #FIDO authenticators (aka #passkeys) and now I _definitely_ don't trust them (the FIDO Alliance, not the tech.)

    media.fidoalliance.org/wp-cont

Read this and tell me what's missing from it. Maybe it's just me, but it seems _extremely_ obvious.

  13. @iamkale @w3c Most of the #fidoalliance resources were written pre #passkey . The #webauthn big bang did not happen yet, because HW requirement, backup considerations, ...

passkey is for the masses. No extra HW, backup built-in
CISOs who did not deploy secure keys yet to employees and admins, might opt for passkey now. I think that scenario is likely.

Still have not found a passkey for the unwashed management presentation.
    (interesting double meaning)

  14. follower power: Is there a management presentation on why we should support #passkey?

    Focus on _management_ not developers.

    developer:

    developers.google.com/identity

    nerd user:
    techcrunch.com/2022/09/12/appl
    developer.apple.com/passkeys/

Why should a web site support passkeys? Why invest money?

    Thank you
