31 Days of Fictional Crushes Day 2 – Qunari: Arishok and Sten

Welcome to the second day! This time, there are more BioWare characters from another series, and it’s Dragon Age!

Three of my DA crushes are Qunari, but I decided to group them starting with the ones who follow the Qun.

Arishok

Nobody knows what his real name is, so we just call him the Arishok. He’s a character that’s easy for players to hate because if you choose to fight him at the end of Act II, he can be really tough. There are jokes on the Internet about the fight being mostly Hawke running away from him while their mabari goes after the Arishok.

I didn’t have to deal with this because I chose to give up Isabela to him, allowing the Qunari to leave. Anyway, I was totally crushing on the Arishok when I saw him, and even more when I saw some art and cinematics where he had longer hair.

All I know about him is that his title makes him a leader to the Qunari people who are now residing in Kirkwall. They cannot return to Par Vollen until they recover what was stolen from them. I do remember, however, first meeting him in the game and thinking he looked sexy, even if the graphics are obsolete.

Not only did I find him attractive, but I just loved how loyal he was to his people and the Qun, the sound of his voice was swoon-worthy, and he has beautiful, long hair while he wields two weapons in battle. I wish that my Hawke could have a fling with him in the game, but alas, the closest thing I got was talking with him any chance I got until I gained his respect and he started calling me, basalit-an.

I’ve had a few dreams and other fantasies about him. The first time I imagined myself singing Ignorance by Paramore while donned in Antaam Saar armour at The Hanged Man to impress him, while he just happened to walk in. Then, came the most well-known one that I think about is when I’m at a convention dressed like him and surrounded by other DA fans, I have nothing in common with, until I find my niche group. I also kissed him in this dream, which is funny now that I look back at it, because he doesn’t strike me as the romantic type!

If he has some songs, it would be Breathin’ by Ariana Grande, and he shares Xandria’s Queen of Hearts Reborn with my other two Qunari crushes, but I suppose he can have Where the Heart is Home.

There’s only one quote that stands

Filth stole from us. Not now, not the saar-qamek. Years ago. A simple act of greed has bound me! We are all denied Par Vollen until I alone recover what was lost under my command! That is why this elf and her shadows are unimportant. That is why I do not simply walk from this pustule of a city! Fixing your mess is NOT the demand of the Qun! AND YOU SHOULD ALL BE GRATEFUL!”

Sten

The hard-headed stoic warrior of the Beresaad finds himself joining the Grey Wardens when they discover him in Lothering during the Fifth Blight. Sten is not really his name, but a rank; however, everyone still calls him that anyway. He was also born without horns, and no one knows why. We don’t get to see much of the Qunari in Origins, so they were still a mystery at that time.

I wasn’t sure how I felt about him at first, but he was one of the companions at the beginning of the game who I thought would be my tank on the team, but he seemed to fall quickly. It was also hard to gain his approval at first, as he liked to keep to himself and didn’t speak much. A lot of times, he disapproved of the choices I made.

If that’s the case, then how did I fall for him? Well, over time, I was able to unveil his soft side as I became persistent in getting to know him. Eventually, he did start talking more and got along with my mabari, even calling them a true warrior after they had a growling contest (no, I’m not joking). Then, when I was having a conversation with him, he said he loves cookies, and I just thought that was so adorable that I imagined baking some for him. He also has an affinity for fine art. He did start calling me kadan once I was able to boost his approval. It all comes down to this: underneath the stone-cold warrior is a big softie!

I had one iconic dream about him once that involved a unique melody that I can still hum, but very faint. It’s a dream that doesn’t make a lot of sense, but there’s a romantic bit, and then I’m crying for him to save me from a powerful storm. Probably the only dream where I could recall original music from.

He does not have his own song yet, but I should really consider finding something for him. My favourite line from him is when he tries to recall what cookies are!

There is…strange food here. You have a thing, it doesn’t have a word in the Qunari tongue. Little baked things like bread but sweet and crumbly.

Then one time he even found cookies for a templar so we could get to the Circle!

Anyway, yep, that’s another day down. Stayed tuned for the next one tomorrow!

31 Days of Fictional Crushes Day 1 – Turians: Adrien Victus and Garrus Vakarian

Welcome to the first post of the challenge! I was so excited to get this project started that I began organizing it back in May! I had 41 characters to sort through, but doing so on MS Word really helped.

So, without any further ado, let’s begin with the first two characters up! Yep, for this article, I’m starting with two since they are from the same universe, which is Mass Effect!

Adrien Victus

Let’s start with the lesser-known turian and the only NPC in Mass Effect that I’m in love with but can’t romance! Come on, BioWare, can I at least have a fling with him?

Adrien Victus is the turian Primarch of Palaven, the turian homeworld. He was formerly a General in the turian military until the hierarchy voted for him to be the new Primarch after the previous one was killed. At first, Adrien wasn’t on board with the idea of going from military to politics, but over time, he became excellent at the role and was able to maintain composure in tough times.

I first played Mass Effect in 2012, so that’s when I met him and would talk to him right away after he was brought on board the Normandy. It took me more than one playthrough until I realized I had a crush on him; I just enjoyed listening to him talk. His voice is actually soothing, he has a strong sense of justice, and he’s an excellent leader. I just have a soft spot for leaders!

I became attracted to him so fast that I don’t know how it happened other than I was just looking forward to speaking to him, so for years I kept wondering, I think I like him, but what is it that I see in him? Then, once I admitted that I was crushing on him, I had a few dreams about him. One of them was where we were dancing at a banquet hall after enjoying a fancy dinner, the whole time, Six, the Xenomorph from the AVP video game, was watching us the entire time.

Another dream, well, it was more than a daydream, is why I came to Palaven as my OC to meet with him for negotiations between my species and his, and as we spend time together, we fall in love. Right now, Adrien doesn’t have a song, but in this daydream, there’s a moment where we sing a karaoke duet of Rewrite the Stars from The Greatest Showman, so that’s something.

As for my favourite quote, it would have to be this when I talk to him on the Normandy for the first time:

The strategist in me admires their brutality. The turian in me knows I’m watching the destruction of fifteen thousand years of civilization. My civilization.

Garrus Vakarian

Now it’s the one everyone knows! Garrus, as you know, is another turian who started off working for C-Sec but quickly grew frustrated with so many rules and red tape. Soon, he left to join Shepard’s team, helped them take down Saren. Depending on the conversations had with him in the first game, he will give C-Sec another chance or never look back.

Eventually, he follows a rebellious lifestyle and goes by Archangel on Omega, making enemies out of the three most notorious mercenary groups in the Terminus Systems before reuniting with Shepard again.

The first time I saw him, it was actually in a meme, related to the Skyrim ones about the “arrow to the knee” phrase. An image of Garrus said, “Arrow to the knee, you say? Well, I took a missile to the face.” That becomes obvious in the second game. So I knew who Garrus was a little bit once I started playing Mass Effect, and I wanted to romance him already just because he was not like the other NPCs the game presented me with.

His awkward and nervous attempts to flirt in the beginning made me giggle, and then by the third game, I loved him even more as he became a total sweetheart while still maintaining the same personality. I melted when he swept my Femshep off her feet and kissed her.

I can’t recall any dreams I’ve had over him, but he’s been my space hubby for thirteen years now, and nothing can tear that apart. I’m still debating on a song for him, currently torn between Creeping In My Soul by Cryoshell and Where Is The Edge from Within Temptation. The latter might be a better option since the former it’s easier for me to think of the Barraki instead.

There are lots of quotes I love from Garrus, but I will go with this classic:

I’m Garrus Vakarian, and this is now, my favourite spot on the Citadel!

Introducing: 31 Days of Fictional Crushes, Starting Tomorrow!

Greetings pyjaks, I know what you’re thinking, it’s the end of the month, so it’s time to put out my monthly musings with music. Well, not this time. Things are going to be a little different.

Tomorrow, Blaugust begins, and for a while, I had this idea brewing in my head about how I wanted to participate this year. The first two years, I winged it, the third I answered a bunch of Bel’s prompts, and now I have an original idea of my own.

This was also inspired by one blogger who used to post all the time. The last time she was very active was when she did a Harry Potter challenge. I’m not sure what happened to her blog after that, but I know it wasn’t the only subject she talked about.

So, I will be doing a similar challenge to that, every day I’m going to upload a post talking about the fictional characters I’m head-over-heels for. Presenting, 31 Days of Fictional Crushes!

You may or may not have seen the gallery of them on this blog, but it’s always growing because of the comfort they bring. (They’re also all men because I’m straight hahaha!) Some of them are human and some of them are not. hell, some of them I don’t even know what the exact name for their species is!

I pondered for a bit what I would write about them. Well, the most obvious would be when I realized I was in love with them. Why do I love them? What’s my favourite quote? What are some unique memories and fun facts I have with these characters? Do I have songs that make me think of them? Music does make my imagination run wild after all! Some of them are from the same universe, so I might combine them into one post. Maker, hopefully, I can fit them all in one month! But that’s why I have to start this project early!

I may have written about a few of them before, and it might make the most sense for me to start with the most obvious one that everyone knows I love, like Optimus Prime, but that’s exactly why I am not starting with him this time! That way, my viewers will get to know the other characters I love besides him, and then when it’s his turn, well, it’s his turn, right?

I never use terms on the Internet like “simp” or “smut” when it comes to my fictional crushes. Why? Well, loving fictional characters is more than just about the sexual fantasies to me. It’s also about their personalities and what they could offer in a romance which is why when I think of them, I sometimes just imagine a kiss in the moonlight or a candlelit dinner with a dance. I can be pretty old-fashioned.

Anyway, keep an eye out, this challenge starts now, and if you’re feeling inspired and have just as many fictional crushes as I do, maybe you’ll want to do the same thing!
