  1. I recently came across a video about the Fibonacci sequence.

    You know: 1 1 2 3 5 8 13 21 34 55 89 144

    And I know we shouldn't need it (everyone should use the metric system! 😅).
    But the researcher mentioned that this is a great number sequence to use when connecting miles to km in your head.

    I've never heard it used that way before, but it's quite practical when having to convert numbers from km to miles or the other way around.

    So 55 mph would be roughly 89 km/h

  10. Leonardo Pisano (c.1170–after 1240), dubbed ‘Fibonacci’, thought that Archimedes' proof that π was between $3\frac{10}{71}$ and $3\frac{1}{7}$ was beautiful [pulcra].

    Archimedes' proof proceeds by calculating approximate ratios of the perimeters of 96-gons circumscribed about and inscribed in a circle to the diameter of that circle, implicitly starting with dodecagons and repeatedly bisecting edges to obtain 24-, 48-, and then 96-gons (see attached image).

    Fibonacci’s judgement seems to be the earliest extant description of a *proof* as beautiful in the European tradition. [Al-Nasawī (fl. 1029–44) had earlier described a proof as beautiful.]

    But there is a twist in the story...

  14. How strong is #Microsoft's #phi4 mini with only 2.32 G? I asked it about the relation between difference equations and the #Fibonacci #sequence. It gave me several pages of its thought process after spending almost 2 minutes without giving me any output. It was over-thinking, looking for a "solution" to my very general question, not knowing that the Fibonacci sequence was kind of a special case of difference equations.     The most interesting part for me: the sum of (n'th Fibonacci number times x^n), for all nonnegative integers n, equals x / (1 - x - x^2). For example:
    - if x = 0.1: 0.1 / 0.89 = 10/89 = 0.11235...
    - if x = 0.01: 0.01 / 0.9899 = 100 / 9899 = 0.01010203050813...

  26. Here's a very simple sequence (generalized from the Fibonacci sequence) to discourage students from generalizing a pattern too quickly. In fact, the sequence will look like it is the powers of 2 until it stops.

    1, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, ..., 2ᵏ, 2ᵏ⁺¹−1, 2ᵏ⁺²−3, 2ᵏ⁺³−8, ...

    By selecting a detail in the sequence's (recursive) formula, I can control what the value of 𝑘 will be. So, technically, this is a family of sequences with the Fibonacci sequence being the one with 𝑘=2.

    Reasons this family of sequences is cool:

    1. I can control exactly what the value of the last power of 2 is and can make the pattern break after 2, 3, 10, 20, or 100 consecutive powers of 2 showing up.

    2. The formula for this sequence is very easy to describe:
    Start with a 1 and to find a new term, add up the last 𝑘 terms of the sequence (everything before the starting 1 that can be considered to be 0 if needed). Note that the 𝑘 terms being added up will match with the first 𝑘 powers of two (starting at 2⁰=1) showing up in the sequence before the pattern breaks.

    3. If you know the Fibonacci sequence (which is the special case of 𝑘=2), then this family of sequences is a natural generalization to look at. See:

    4. If we adjust it to say "sum of all previous terms", we do in fact get the powers of two sequence.
    Proof (by induction):
    Base case: 1 + 1 = 2
    Hypothesis: Assume that upto now, we've added up terms and gotten a power of two, say 2ᵏ.
    Inductive step: For the next term, when we add all previous terms, we would add the terms that gave us 2ᵏ and then add the 2ᵏ term itself resulting in the sum of 2ᵏ⁺¹.
