Alright. I was already setting up my emulator with my FFX iso and then the documentation of said emulator uses FFX as the example for command line options. I guess someone who believes in signs would have already completed FFX by this point. This is like the 7th time I am reminded of that 25-year-old game in just a couple months. 🤣

Okok same Triple Click episode, Jason Schreier also mentioned the Al Bhed language as one of his favorites of fake languages in video games (another listener question) and yeah ok, I can read the signs, they don't stop, it's like the letter that Harry is eligible to go to Hogwarts, I will replay FFX, it's fine, don't lock me under the stairs. Just let me finish Lightning Returns first. (One more in-game day, this time for real, the game was explicit about it!)

New merch announced for the FFX anniversary and the print stuff reminds me that I own the official guide for FFX and that said guide is great. I guess that's one more reason to replay the game - I played it once without guide on simplified, once without guide on advanced and once with guide on advanced already, but it's been over ten years since the last time and I bet I've still not seen every detail.

What are the chances any event is happening at all? Does the game still have big enough of a community to appear at some con on the same date etc? I wonder if I should try to get my vaguely planned FFX cosplay done for a certain date or just for my personal fun.

So I gutted my way through FFX, and it was in fact a real slog. An enjoyable slog (is that a thing?), but it is a really heavy, slow game. Absolute banger nü-metal intro song. Last time I played it I was a forlorn college student. X-2 came out while I still had access to a PS2 but I passed on it, it seemed goofy. But!...
Actually I'm really digging X-2. If FFX was intentional, methodical, a meditation on death with a water-polo minigame, soaring instrumentals punctuated by metal, then X-2 is entirely the opposite. I heard it described as Final Fantasy: Charlie's Angels, and well, not wrong! But there's nothing bad about a fun adventure with a banger J-Pop intro song (and sequence), a gambling minigame, and heist movie music and aesthetics.
All this to say, sucks that I was a chauvinist hater back then, this game owns.

I've also found that setting specific goals that I can stick a number on, or even better, a binary "Did I achieve it? Yes/No" have worked the best for me.
One last piano note: when I started, the one song I really wanted to play was To Zanarkand from the game Final Fantasy X. Happily, I learned it last year, and here it is for you, played by me.

I have some friends who jokingly call me "Herr Chemnitz", which is as if the name of the town I live in was my last name and they were adressing me formally. I asked them if they'd adjust that if I moved and what they came up with was some royal title like Lord town1 of town2 (continuing to use one as the last name and the other one as origin). I instead suggested making it "Rikku of Bikanel", but sadly, they declined.

Having spent just a few min in menus and a battle in FFX on the PS2, I immediately remembered how much I loved this game. There's a reason I played this huge game 3 times. The gameplay just worked really well for me. I loved the spheroboard character development. I loved the battle mechanics. I loved optimizing weapons etc.
Especially the weapons stuff is a bit weird. FFX does this thing where it caps damage at 9999 (while in late game, enemies are in the millions of HP) ..1/2

It works! Oh wow. So many emotions. While I don't miss the CRT noise (I tried!), the sound of the PS2 fan gives me some comfort. And that intro... I often enjoy watching the intros of games over and over, but for FFX, they chose one of the saddest moments in the game, so I always skip it. 😭 I must have overcome something though. There were times when I couldn't listen to this soundtrack. Now I'm fine.
Also, the Dualshock 2 is ridiculously small! wtf.

Since FFX is from 2001 and was only released for the PS2, there's not much artwork and not many screenshots either. I'll pull out my official guide and check if there's something in there.
However, there's hundreds of cosplayers from all eras, providing a huge amount of cosplays of varying detail and photos of varying quality and I'm enjoying the research.
Also I'll fire up my PS2 today for different reasons, so I can check if my savegames still work.
