a decade ago i went through a long period where i had no friends, no money, no memory card for my ps1, and too much free time every night
one month, i sat down and played Final Fantasy VIII every night. because i had no memory card, the game was effectively in insta-permadeath mode: one bad decision in battle could kill the entire party.
that forced me to play very conservatively. i grinded every random encounter until my characters were overpowered for the area. this ensured that i'd never get accidentally ganked in battle. every night, i'd turn off the tv and leave the PSX on overnight.
after several weeks, i had made it about 40 hours into the game, and hit a nice cinematic reward cutscene. i sat back to enjoy the fmv: the party ran across a bridge, fleeing as the bridge disintegrated behind them. except it was weird: the party just stood there as the bridge collapsed.
......................
it was an *interactive* cutscene, and i was supposed to run the party the rest of the way myself.
the bridge collapsed, and they all died. the game over screen rolled.
i stood up, shut off the PSX for the first time in a month, and screamed
that was the last time i played FF8.
10 years later, i still don't have any friends or money, but i DO have a memory card.
is it time ff8? 🤔

Also ever think about how the Tomb of the Unknown King is just chilling out there with the explicit intent of rendering his name and very existence forgotten with some mumbo-jumbo about how speaking the name of a dead king brings bad luck? And then you can go meet his ghost and all he does is thank you for freeing him, hand you a playing card/pic of Minotaur, and move on to the next life sounding perfectly pleasant and reasonable, if a bit tired? Ever think about how his country is now a military dictatorship?
I mean never mind that Sacred and Minotaur have crown motifs and are totally royal guards, slightly worse for wear with the various rust spots. Clearly SOMEONE was keeping him sane and having a pic while Minotaur has one of Sacred implies everyone is on good terms, but what, were they just told "do not open until Kingdom Come?" The dude didn't rise cackling to take over the world; he quietly went to Heaven by the looks of it. Why didn't they just free him?

Y'ever think about how in FF8 there's a whole SeeD exam that requires you to defeat Ifrit in a time limit of your choosing and then Squall just walks off with him like he doesn't still have a job to do? XD
Like I get it; maybe he only planned on holding onto him for a semester and then saving the world happened, but there's every indication a Guardian Force is an individual like an Esper in FF6. There are similar individuals, like Bahamut and Tiamat, but not a bunch of copies running around like an Aeon in FFX.

Meanwhile, there’s nothing good I can say about Final Fantasy 8’s Junction system — it’s not that you can’t do neat things with it, it’s just that it’s so abstract as to be incomprehensible; you’re recycling physical items using a PLAYING CARD into an abstract magic quantity which you ‘attach’, somehow, onto your stats (which are also abstract). What does any of this even LOOK like!?? The designers should have just given players a hex-editor or spreadsheet.

More thoughts time: of the four wheelchair-user NPCs I’ve seen so far, three were Garden students (try as I might I couldn’t tell if this one was wearing SeeD uniform or not tho) and I want to know if this guy was originally called this, since most of the NPCs you talk to in this event in the game are called things like “student no.7” etc. did they give this guy a title to show that SeeDs don’t have to be physically superior, that there are other roles for SeeDs outside of combat? #ffviii #ff8

Were the NPCs in wheelchairs added with the remaster? Tbh I genuinely dont remember if they were in the OG but I feel like they weren’t? It’s Interesting bc it suggests that SeeDs don’t necessarily have to be combat specialists, which adds a whole new level of meta to the fandom. Like, in the fic I’m currently writing, not being combat-capable is a whole plot point, and this kind of tosses that whole theory. Just thoughts 🤷🏻♀️ #ffviii #ff8
