Finally getting around to replacing the head gasket on my primary #Festiva.
Speedy’s Machine Shop in Oxnard did an awesome job on the head. It looks brand new. Had the valves done too.

The Ford Festiva Is an Icon of Performance and Perseverance
https://www.hagerty.com/media/automotive-history/the-ford-festiva-is-an-icon-of-performance-and-perseverance/Those Festivas I saw for months at the Ford store couldn’t possibly imagine a future where they turned heads like their Fox Body Mustang relatives. But that’s precisely what happened, as the 1,700 lb Festiva went from an impressive fuel sipper with a small group of loyal fans, to an affordable pocket rocket with suspension and steering subsystems sporting Mazda-worthy dynamics.
So the Festiva with its muscular little fenders and a heart of engineering gold occupies a unique spot in automotive history. It’s no “small wonder” (sorry) that the platform survived in markets around the world well after the American Festiva disappeared in 1993. Perhaps the Tunisian derivative that’s still for sale today is also a hoot to drive at full tilt, as it’s always more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. It has gotta be a giddly little thrill, because the legacy of ‘stiva life cannot be wrong.

And even if I do need to change the head gasket, I won't need to pull the engine. I only pulled it last time, because the plan was to swap engines between the cars. And it was my first head gasket, so wanted to have good access.
But now I can just pull the head, and take that down to the machine shop. And I'm not as broke as a few months ago, so could probably have them do the valves now too. Only concern is if there's enough casting left for them to redeck it again if it warped. If not, I'll have to get a new head from a #Festiva group member.

In discussions with experts in the #Festiva group. They seem to think the head gasket did go creating a leak between cylinders. This will lead to the bog and pop I'm getting. I'm still holding out hope that a head bolt retorque will reseal that gap. Head probably warped a little, and I might be able to overcome that.

Getting the daily driver dialed in. Installed the one rare power steering/ac pulley a #Festiva enthusiast sent me. The pulley radius is slightly bigger than my original pulley, so had to play the Goldilocks game a few times before I found a belt that was just right. Put fresh power steering fluid in. Fixed the speedometer cable. Calibrated the fuel and temp gauges while the cluster was out. Just need to top off trans fluid with some synchromesh I just got and top off the coolant and she’ll be in tip top shape.

Missing 4 little bolts that hold the transmission backing plate on. They’re not absolutely critical, but waiting for the #Festiva experts to weigh in on the thread and pitch size so I can just get new ones, cause they’re a lot easier to attach with the engine out.
Just losing 4 little bolts is pretty good for a 3 month long job with the engine pulled multiple times without a proper garage space to keep things organized. I’m sure they’re in my giant bucket of miscellaneous bolts, screws, and parts but I can’t find that right now either.

Yay! I found someone who has the rare accessory pulley I need for my daily driver now that it has the 120k engine with the large nose crank. I'll be able to get my power steering back!!
It's rare because hardly anyone bothered to pay extra for power steering on these 1800lb cars. And the large nose cranks were only in the 92/93 models. And the car needed to be PS and AC to have the serpentine belt. otherwise it's a V-pulley. That's a lot of ANDs. lol.

My rebuilt front steering knuckles finally arrived. They were both shipped from USPS in North Carolina in identical boxes on Feb 18 from the same location. One arrived here Feb 20. The next one somehow didn't arrive until late yesterday.
While most everything on a Ford #Festiva is easy to work on, the front knuckles are a horrible design. Captured rotors - meaning you have to split the hub to replace a brake rotor. which means you need to replace the bearings & seals.
To make matters worse, the bearings require a special tool to determine which of 22 preload spacers to use. spacers & tools no longer available...

Not exactly a tank, but look at this beast of a cope cage. lol.
Makes me want to do that on my little Ford #Festiva. It's small enough that I could have a cope cage in the size and shape of a GMC Yukon XL or Chevy Suburban SUV, or maybe a cybertruck to protect me from all the land yacht death machines on SoCal freeways.

Having used DuckDuckGo exclusively ever since learning of Google's complicity in supplying computing resources to the IDF - potentially including AI targeting, I am very pleased to discover that when I search for #Festiva stuff, I actually get Festiva results instead of Ford Fiesta bs - even without using quotes or forcing a "-fiesta" query (which google would then ignore anyways)

Worried about some of my #Festiva folks. Just watched someone try to start theirs with starting fluid, followed by having to stomp out a grass fire they started instead. lol.
Little known fact: these cars are designed with a safety fuel pump switch in the air meter. the fuel pump won't run unless there's vacuum in the air intake. So if using starting fluid, you have to reassemble the air intake before starting which avoids exactly this scenario of fire coming out your intake tube.

I might be able to score another free #Festiva from the PNW. Pretty exciting if it comes through. That'll be 3 in my fleet. I'll be able to do some engine swapping and maybe some resto work and then sell one of them. They're really going up in value.

hmm. Someone in the #Festiva group wound up with a short in the connector on the fuel pump side of his fuel sending unit and it did this.
What's concerning is the only protection that circuit has is a fusible link in the engine bay and he says that didn't burn up.
So now I think I need to add an inline fuse to the fuel pump leg of that circuit. This unit sits inside the gas tank. That's one place where you really don't want an electrical fire.
