We had another #FermeScholen student conference on vegetable #fermentation and #microbial_literacy. Last weeks experience gave us a bit more peace of mind to enjoy it even more ourselves. Students were more rowdy but positively rowdy. An auditorium filled with young bulls. Lots of shouty fun!
Our own students, who helped us out with the project this entire year, dropped off a pie. Really it's them who should get the praise for being such motivated

Did a thing yesterday. 175 teenagers, 12 #teachers, 30 microbiologists, a nurse and a pro cook celebrated the first #FermeScholen conference on food #fermentation and microbial literacy. Properly opened by a vice dean, keynote by prof. Sarah Lebeer, plenary session, fun workshops, conference swag and poster session with fancy drinks.
Kids loved it, workshoppers had a blast, our student poster jury did a fab job... 10/10 will do it again. Next week. #highereducation #Citizenscience #microbiology

Onze eerste #FermeScholen leerlingenconferentie heeft alvast 'n verschilletje gemaakt: 180 enthousiaste leerlingen en leerkrachten, gedreven studenten #bioingenieur, enkele toegewijde sponsors en 40 gemotiveerde collega's-workshopbegeleiders.
Even recupereren met onze eigen practica en dan volgende week nog eens!

Our #FermeScholen project has 4 extra fairies! Bachelor students Ward, Julie, Maja and Anouck started on the lab work for their thesis: they set up their own #fermentations, made a movie plan and discussed the conference style closing event ("We're gonna need a bigger auditorium"). About 40-50 classes of secondary school students are joining for this year's edition, all fermenting peppers and exploring the microbial communities growing in it. Looking forward to so much hands on #microbiology

Microbial literacy for highschoolers: after their research project, they visit our lab, we discuss their results. They found 3 new microbes in different genera. They're beyond excited now. #Microbiology rocks! #FermeScholen #RealScienceForRealKids #education #STEM
