🐴 #LostBones #FossilFriday 🐟🐘🦥🐪 In the summer of 2012, students from the Geology Department at Gustavus Adolphus College collected over 800 bones on the Des Moines River near Jackson, Minnesota.
This crunchy but beautiful left horse femur was part of the project and is now housed at the Jackson County Historical Society in Lakefield.

A remarkable find: Two neighbors contributed a total of 100 bison bones, discovered in separate years from the same lowland peat deposit spanning a highway in Walcott County, Minnesota. Notably, one of the collections shows possible signs of butchery.Both collections are now at the Rice County Historical Society in Faribault, Minnesota.

Found in Miles City, Montana, this partial Columbian mammoth femur is housed at the Pipestone County Museum. It is currently not on display but a partial tusk and jaw from the same Montana doner are. More to come on those!

Its #MammothMonday Jim van Dijk has spent the last few months building the world's first reconstruction of a southern mammoth for the Museum Historyland Hellevoetsluis in Hellevoetsluis, Netherlands.Not only is the sculpture just an awesome site but Dick “Sir Mammoth” Mol was a consultant on the project.

It’s #Minnesota #FossilFriday! 🦣🐪🦥🦫🐴🐟🍃 This beautiful Bison occidentalis skull is housed at the Anoka County Historical Society. Found in a black dirt pit near Andover it was donated in 1977 along with related vertebrae, long bones, pelvis, ribs, shoulder blades, and carpals.
The skull’s horn span across the cores is 75cm, nearly 30 inches!

Happy #Minnesota #FossilFriday! 🐴🦬🦣 More on the horse of course. The next year of the horse isn't until 2026 but the last couple of years were great for finding horse specimens for me and a fellow amateur fossil hunter in Southern Minnesota.
These more modern finds are all from riverbed gravel bars in Southern Minnesota. The area has a mix of glacial sediments crossing over Cenomanian siltstone, sandstone, and limestone. 🦥🐪🦴
