I attempted to read early #BellHooks this week. It wasn't as insightful as I was hoping it would be. which is a huge #letdown. I read the first four chapters in her book "#FeministTheory" and was just fucking #annoyed. It's not theory at all. It's a young frustrated Hooks complaining about #whitefeminism, which - fine. I get it. But it's the naming of the book that bothers me. Calling your book a "#theory" when it's literally just your point of view is #disingenuous. Hooks was clearly sick of #whitewomen when she wrote "Feminist Theory" and, again, fine. But she didn't represent the voices of #Latina #feminists, #Asian feminists, #indigenous feminists, #male feminists, or any other group. And so here she is complaining that white women dominate an ideology by considering themselves as central to the movement (and maybe that was the case in the 80s but it's lesser so now), but she herself was centering her experience on her own and leaving out other voices. Not a great start for my intro into Hooks. I'm gonna have to take a long break from early Hooks because I was just left annoyed. Not a fan of complainers and not a fan of academics. Was hoping she was better than that but not in the 80s she wasn't. #bookreview

I like to think Shell Shocked, my book on Feminist Criticsm after Trump (2021) contributed in some small way to this excellent choice for word of the year: “gaslighting ,” though the definition here is less insidious than the sense one gets from Homer, Morrison, the film Gaslight, and the series Stranger Things (which I discuss) Importantly, as I argue, the gaslight in all of these sources is not just poison but also cure (or off-ramp anyway) #feministtheory, #politicaltheory, #democratictheory
