  1. Just watched #Casablanca again. It's been 20 years but it was on in my house growing up probably once a year. All I really took from it as a kid was romance. Which is too bad because there's a lot in there about refugees, compassion, fascism, and resistance. But I think "romance" is all I could process.

Now...the main idea seems to be that if women and Black people prostrate themselves to you you can be an honorable resistance hero. If they don't, you're justified in betraying the resistance, using women for sex then discarding them, getting drunk, and sacrificing people to the fascists.

Also if you are pouty and self-centered and cold and jaded and a "lone ranger," you're better tactically at making the resistance work than if you stay true to your values, organize, and take risks. But even the people who do all that are justified in demanding forever devotion from teenage girls.

This post is about my misogynist abusive parent.

  2. CW: slightly lewd slur, shitpost, cistem, gear pr0n

Here‘s to the lady misgendering and pointing at me with a smirk, as I waited to get done at the beauty salon while reading Feminist Killjoy, today:
Your cis-het concept of gender presentation can :blobcatkissblush: kiss my ARPs. May your ear buds explode in accordance with Andrea Parker and Sara Ahmed.

  3. "When we talk of “white men” we are describing an institution."
    - Sara Ahmed, White Men

If you haven't read Sara Ahmed, you're missing out.

Her essay "White Men" goes a long way to making sense of how institutions work, and how their behaviours diverge from their stated mandates.

I read this essay 8 1/2 years ago and I have never stopped thinking about it.

  4. "Unseen violence is not simply violence that is not seen. Unseen violence is an action. You have to unsee something because it is seen. A complaint can be an effort to make the violence seen, to bring it out. A protest, also, can be an effort to bring the violence out, to make it public by creating a public." (Sara Ahmed, Killjoy Truths)

  5. I'm also practicing at being a #FeministKilljoy - in a "I need to get better at this" kind of way.

I am generally socially inept so I lurk a lot rather than join in a conversation.

In non-SF reading, my favourite authors are probably Victor Hugo and Arthur Ransome... In SF reading I have far too many, Peake, Le Guin, Delaney, Hobb, Sam J Miller, RB Lemberg, Ada Palmer, NK Jemison...
