Two years ago today, I released “Life's in the Balance"—my #Fedivision2023 entry—as a single. I wrote most of it in my head a month earlier in an emergency room when I wasn’t 100% certain I would survive a freak malignant hyperthermia crisis (temp spiked to 105.5º F). All proceeds continue to go to MHAUS.org

Interesting! Searching "fediverse" on Google Images brings up my track of the same name's cover artwork just 15 images down.
Yeah, I know, it's the big tech companies Google and Spotify, but I still find it pretty interesting my artwork's near the top of Google Images for "fediverse". :Fediverse:

There should be a #Fediverse event similar to #Fedivision2023 called "Fedi's Got Talent" or something like that.
Lasting for a week, it's where you show off your talents of any form like writing, music, singing, dancing, arts and crafts, hacking, photography, or another talent you're good at.
Like #Fedivision, there'd be a website where people submit their Fediverse handle and their act to be displayed, and a bot for people to vote on talents on the Fediverse, with a voting code for each act.

CW: A #Fedivision story (longish)
While we organizers were experimenting with making #Fedivision2023 more accessible, we trialled a media player that was able to do live captioning. It worked better for video than music—you needed to give it a WEBVTT text file with timestamps for every line—and it was so time-consuming to program that it was out of the question to do it for all 30-odd entries with lyrics. I tested it out for my entry https://futzle.bandcamp.com/track/haul-on-the-jib-a-recursive-c-shanty and it took me a couple of hours and a shell script that did BPM arithmetic. So we abandoned captions.
It's a pity, because there are so many fun jokes you can do with realtime subtitles, and I used every one.
That first A on the fiddle in the song got captioned as «440 Hz protocol handshake tone».
The chant "One Fibonacci, Two Fibonacci, Three Fibonacci, Five Fibonacci" is funniest when you don't know the punchline is coming, so each phrase of the chant was captioned separately to not spoil the joke.
By the time the second chorus comes along, it has well and truly earwormed itself (sorry about that), so I captioned it as code. While the vocals are singing "Do you know how to fib?", the captions are instead declaring the fib function as «int fib(int n) {».
Maybe we can do it next #Fedivision? But there needs to be better tooling to make the VTT files, and under the time pressure of getting the site going, it was beyond what we could do. At least you know about the silly in-jokes now.

@Aarkon @fedivision I guess they took them down as some of the artists want to publish the tracks more officially.
@non_saturatio has been keeping a very useful list of those #FediVision tracks which have been published on other sites here: https://mastodon.online/@non_saturatio/110566790036476685 - but it's only about half the entries so far. The list is still being updated, so maybe keep it favourited?

Hey @radiofreefedi , would you accept long-form content? I've been collecting my favorite songs, or at least the most interesting ones that I'd like to comment on, from #fedivision2023 , and record a kind of radio show about it.
I'd get artist permission first, of course. It would probably be 30+ minutes.

If you've found me from my "Fediverse" track I submitted to #Fedivision #Fedivision2023, this new release sounds nothing at all like it – it's not bubbly and melodic, this one's harsh, abrasive, and might not be for everyone...and neither will the track I release after this!

Really enjoy the song by @negativeplayers. First things first, I'm blown away by the production quality here, it sounds sooo good! And then - it is a fantastic song! The chord progressions are gorgeous, the way the melody interveawes with the backing vocals is especially satisfying, and the lyrics are 😗 👌
