I think most of my listeners from the Fedi still hail from the days when #fedivision was still a thing, and small enough so that you didn't need to scream and shout to make yourself heard. I loved it in that incarnation.

In its last year, it became a big "scream the loudest, get your vote" kind of event, and that kind of killed it.

But I maintain that something like that is dearly missing (…)

@etherdiver is an essential follow for discovering musicians and songwriters on the Fediverse.

@labr is a live radio station that frequently features DJs and artists on the Fediverse.

Hashtags are a great way of finding artists. #BandcampFriday was earlier this month and many artists were using the opportunity to promote their choons. #Rock, #Metal, #Pop, #Soul, #Synth, #Folk, or even just #music are all active hashtags. You could explore the #Fedivision hashtag for a bunch of Fedi-artists too.

Also, you could post your own work and let yourself be found. If you have something particular you’d like to promote, let me know - I’m usually up for boosting art on the Fediverse!

I've said this before when there was that #Fedivision thing, with all you indie musicians out there, often the weakest part of the music is the vocals.

There are some really great tracks but with weak vocals.

And I'm not saying singers need to be classically trained or anything. I listen to The Fall and No Wave and Punk, etc. So singing 'nicely' isn't really an issue.

I'm not sure exactly what it is. Perhaps it's just focusing on communicating. You are (probably) a human and you need to sing like you are singing to other probable humans.

I suppose musicians who have been signed by a production company are singing to real people when they record. There's still a live performance element and a need to please the production people.

Perhaps that's it. Or perhaps it's something to do with how the vocals are recorded. But it's the difference between sounding right and sounding like someone singing in their bedroom.

And vocals are very important. One thing that has always put me off bands is the lousy vocals while the rest of the band might be quite good. I sort of think Beefheart's vocals are a major barrier that puts people off the Magic Band's music.

The #Fedivision song competition had been an annual event on the Fediverse for several years. In 2024, #Dgar entered this song, All Zombies Go To Heaven, which contained references to religion and some have suggested it was commentary on modern conservative politics and right-wing culture. Whether this was intentional or not, the Fedivision song contest was canceled and would never be held again.

My sentiments exactly. Fedivision 2023 was the first song contest I had ever attempted, and it was my introduction to so many amazing fedi artists. Heck, that first #Fedivision meant so much to me that I started writing my entry in my head while experiencing a malignant hyperthermia crisis in an emergency room and not 100% certain I would survive it (temp had spiked to 105.5°F in minutes)...a great mental distraction.

It's not often you can point at something and say "that was genuinely life-changing", but this is one of them.

Some of you have been asking about the #Fedivision song contest, and whether it will run this year.

#Fedivision2025 will not be run.

The organizers (@TQ, @zatnosk, and me) agree that the Fediverse has grown to a size where Fedivision doesn’t work as a format any more. We have so many talented amateur musicians here that it’s not practical for voters to commit the hours of time needed to listen to all the entries. The labour required to organize the event has also scaled past the point where we can do it in our spare time.

My #fedivision (#vision inspired by the #fediverse): Within the next 20 years people will begin to transfer the structure of the fediverse and how it is managed to the real world.

Citizens will be able to choose the country they wanna live in just the way they today choose the software (#friendica #mastodon #misskey ...), the server and the app they use to socially interact with each other. If they don't like how their server (formerly known as country) is governed they can pack their things and move to another one with close to zero transaction cost.

Today users can voluntarily give money to admins to pay communication infrastructure like #servers and cost's for #administration & #moderation. Today we all are obliged to pay #taxes (except for clever antisocial actor's) in our countries. In the future we can decide where (if at all) our money goes to. There will be admins and servers that have special real world agendas (green energy, strengthening local communities, raising awareness for minorities, air taxis ...) And there might even be servers that pay their users for being there. This money will be demanded from #companies or other non-social actor's like #billionaire's for not de-federating them. They will pay the fee's as it will be their only way to socially interact with or show commercials to others.

In 20 years admins and moderators will be what #politicians and #bureaucrats are today. Servers are what countries are today. Just like #Wikipedia is today what the Encyclopædia Britannica was 20 years ago.
