Mastodon.cloud has been poorly moderated for a long time. Sujitech has all but abandoned it, so we are... actually somewhat relieved. It was a source of spam and ick, any more. We defederated with them due to their lack of response, but we may recommend a temp re-federation to allow for possible joins.

For instances struggling with icky people trying to sign up... our extra step during sign-ups is working as intended. As we suspected, filling out the application is enough of a barrier that trolls and spammers are mostly weeded out.
Does it reduce possible sign ups? Probs. Does it create more work? A little. But it means that we have a better idea of who ends up on the Speakeasy.
We def recommend giving it a try.

We've closed signups on indieweb.social for the weekend after a huge increase in attempted spam sign ups.

The Speakeasy uses a two-step process to approve applications, bc "just" turning on approvals doesn"t give us enough info to decide if the person applying is legit. We sort of had a hypo that two step apps would help us catch spam and trolls and so far... it is working!
Stats:
- 2 scam troll accounts using throwaway email
- 1 spam account
- 1 approved
- 2 pending replyEventually, we will fail and let someone in who doesnt vibe. That's just facts. But mostly, requiring enough to get a feel for ppl is working well.
We're of course going to revise as we go, but... fof admins and mods who are frustrated with the limits of Masto sign up options... u might want to consider two step sign ups too!

We're reviewing the below comment and follow-ups from the admin of burnout.cafe. We're probably going to open discussion within the Speakeasy on how to proceed (the instance users on burnout aren't at fault), but we strongly condemn the premise that "gay pornography" needs to be singled out for removal.
Our thoughts:
The admin(at)burnout(dot)cafe call for a ban of "gay pornography.". We believe this to be a homophobic position as it singles out the LGBTQIA+ (Rainbow Panopoly) community for a behavior that is implied to be "less problematic" if heterosexuals do it. To be crystal, sex is natural and healthy and we will not shame our members or anyone on the fedi for enjoying or sharing it. We esp will not be singling out particular sexualities for censure.
The comments from the admin compare gay pornography to execution and gore videos. We believe the comparison of consensual sex to non-consensual violence and graphic injury super offensive; it suggests that non-het sex is somehow wrong.

So we are not misunderstood, we do not believe that blocking porn allowing instances on a SEXUALITY NEUTRAL basis is homophobic. But to single out the LBBTQIA+ community specifically is, in our opinion, because it targets us not because we post sex, but because we're not hetero.

Good morning, fedi!
Mastodon 4.6 is out, and one feature we were totes looking forward to is mandatory TFA! We strongly recommend our fellow modmins enable it, especially on larger instances where spammers and scammers like to take ovr accounts.
It is kind of non-intuitive; u have to enable it in the roles.

Thank u to @jase for bringing pawoo.net to our attention. Pawoo is yet another Mastodon server run by Sujitech, the ppl behind mastodon.cloud and mstdn.jp. All three instances are extremely behind on patches and moderation isn't happening.
We have reached out to Sujitech repeatedly with no response. BC of the risks, we recommend defederating with all Sujitech instances including:
- mastodon.cloud
- mstdn.jp
- pawoo.netIf u or ur instance members have friends on those instances, it would be good fedi citizenship to help them move. If u need, we can point u to good places to find instances.
Tagging mods and admins as these instances prob pose a security risk. We will update as we find more instances.

If I could have all the electricity and water for free that data centers use up just for AI bots attempting to sign-up at climatejustice.social with sloppy sign-up reasons, I'd probably have to pay no more bills.
Instead I fight AI bots with no compensation and my bills rise and rise.

The Speakeasy has suspended obihahn(at)na(dot)social for posting un-CW videos of ppl dying, anti-LGBTQIA+ sentiment. We do not recommend viewing the videos obv. If you need more detail, DM us and we will explain.
We are also highly suspicious of na(dot)social. We anticipate having a recommendation this evening, bit the accounts hosted there, the follows by the users do suggest that they are at least ick instance adjacent.
We'll keep u all up to date.

As the Speakeasy discusses opening membership to more ppl, one of the biggest questions we have is "how do we age check?"
No, wait! Stop with the pitchforks! We don't mean it like corpos mean it. We just mean, we are an 18+ community and we'd prefer to stay that way, you know? Right now, we have a super long vibe check in secret where we figure it out, but that's just not easy to do if we're letting ppl sign up, even with spot vibe checking.
So, fedi admins, fedi mods... any privacy respecting ways u have found to do this? Or do we need to just saw ppl in half to count their rings?

If you don't encounter a lot of LLM-spam and obvious trolls in the Fediverse right now, then your mods are doing a lot of good, unpaid work. 👍

Amazing! This will fund:
- Better blocklist synchronisation
- Integrating the #FediMod Fires Protocol (https://fires.fedimod.org), which I only just learned about but adds things like adviseries, retractions and end-of-life 'tombstones' to blocklisted entities
- Remote media storage 🎉 aka Fediverse Auxiliary Servers (https://github.com/mastodon/fediverse_auxiliary_service_provider_specifications) to "allow sharing storage and media processing between servers" - which could have a huge impact in reducing server costs and carbon footprint.
- "Automated content detection" thru these Auxiliary Servers.
- End-to-end encryption for private messages 🎉.
- €90k of funding for other Fediverse projects "wanting to implement support for the two new Fediverse Auxiliary Service Provider specifications" -
Anybody know anything about vebinet<dot>com? stella_reed from there seems to be a bot-like creature. Joined mar. 22. Earliest posts read like AI free verse. Goes on with demoralising, (partly unsourced) media-quotes .

A thought from us on open registration...
We understand that open registration removes the overhead of having to approve like, every account. Buuuuut it also cuts way down on harassment, spam accounts, scam accounts. And tbh it lets you grow your instance (if that's your goal) at a rate you can sustain, right?
We operate on an invite only model, BC we are all busy and being a mod / admin takes work. But it also means we can keep up with mod stuffs. And better, we actually KNOW the ppl on our instance. They're not faceless ppl and we're not faceless mods.
So like... please consider closed / approval based registration, vet your users. It'll be a better time for all of us.

So, we do check each report for rules violations. We don't just trust other instances' reports. So IF your instance is similar to ours and IF you trust our checks then yes, probs.
