I haven't yet decided whether I'll move to @[email protected] or @[email protected] - I'll decide the next couple of days.

Note: I'll keep my other account @martinrust and I'm going to use it mainly for topics of IT, information security, and online and digital culture. Whoever wants to follow me for these topics is welcome to do so already.

Is there a Mastodon (or equivalent ActivityPub microblog software) instance that blocks both Threads and Bluesky?

Bonus points if it’s a long-standing and stable instance that would be expected to be around for a long time.

For newcomers and others looking to switch to modest-sized well moderated instances with open registration, @FediGarden has a listing.

I can also recommend the instance I am on, tenforward.social, although it has a very modest minimum financial contribution commitment requirement for new registrations.

So the back story. About a month ago, I set up my own self-hosted single-user Mastodon* instance using @yunohost and @gotosocial .

I pulled my contacts over from my old Mastodon account at @Vivaldi .

Unfortunately, around 1000+ contacts didn't pull across (I'm guessing simply because the instance was so new).

Anyways, 30 days later, I tried again, and this time it appears to have (mostly) worked 😁

So. Welcome to all the folks I'm now seeing/who are seeing this post from @aj 😁

* Before you type the comment, yes I know GtS isn't Mastodon, but I'm accessing it using the same apps I used for my old Mastodon account to mainly talk to people on Mastodon, so functionally it serves the same purpose.

in this very moment I'm importing my posts from @[email protected] to @[email protected] using #slurp by @vyr as a kinda test. yesterday I imported the emojos, which went almost smoothly, despite a few hiccups and some manual solutions I had to make for them to be surpassed.

this post backdating feature inaugurated in the latest @gotosocial release is a big game-change-starter for ActivityPub and Fediverse platforms in general. one can only hope that @Gargron and the #Mastodon dev team finally solve this huge missed feature in their software.

I've had big trouble watching #youtube videos using #freetube / #invidious / #piped these past few weeks, and youtube _is_ fully controlled by an increasingly tech-feudalism / trump-fascism aligned megacorp; so I'm trying to wean myself off that platform.

so, fedizens, I need your ideas: I want to migrate permanently from this Mastodon account to my new @gotosocial account at @[email protected], but I would like to at least try to migrate my posts in some way or form.

I can think of boosting posts from this account in the new one, but would those boosts survive if I ever take this instance offline for good?

I can also think of manually and contextually re-posting toots from this account in the new one, but that sounds extremely laborious and might be confusing to my followers.

is there any other way I could go about this that doesn't involve waiting patiently for the day when fediverse platform devs will finally implement an organic and native way of migrating whole accounts, including posts? any suggestions?

the one thing I hate the most about most Fediverse platforms is how it's all "you can migrate your account, you're free, yay" but the ONE thing you can't migrate it's your posts, which is the MAIN thing!!! it amazes me how after all this time Mastodon and the like didn't solve this problem (and it seems like it's not even a priority, at least in the Mastodon camp). :AAAAAA:

it's not like it's impossible, tho, since Hubzilla it's fully capable of it, for example.

Hey new fedi people: Mastodon isn't like those other apps. It's like going for a walk in the woods. First, start with being quiet. Take note of the plant witch in the moss covered hut. Click follow. Observe the gentle troll sleeping in a pile of leaves. Click follow. Say hello to the owl peering down at you from the oak tree. Click follow. Keep following until your feed is a calm forest stream flowing past lichen covered stones. Now you have reached the meadow. Take a nap. #fedimigration

I just had an idea, I'd like to explore with you: We make campaigns with our walled garden friends where there's a list they can sign vouching that "If all the others on this list move to the Fediverse, then I will too". Every time a new person signs it, it can potentially be the small difference that makes another person sign it too, and so on. Each campaign is local to a community and has a deadline: "We move this date". You finish with a celebration. #fedimigration #mastodonmigration #fedi

A friend of mine is interested in getting a Fedi-account and I promised to send her server suggestions. The thing is that there a few things that a good server for her should provide:

- She has relatively serious aspirations to become a politician for the Dutch socialist party, so the server should probably not be super strict about banning campaigning for progressive political parties.
- Anti-electorialist servers are thus probably not really an option
- She has indicated that she might want to do some posting in Dutch, so ideally it should be possible to select the language of a post on a per-post basis (aka: As much as I love Sharkey, it doesn’t really offer that right now). Translation-support on the server would thus also be a plus, even though she is completely fluent in English.
- Knowing her, she might want to post NSFW-content, so the server should be fine with that, as long as it happens behind content-warnings.
- She is a member of various minority-groups (trans, poly, Sinti, and those are just some of the ones she is public about…) so firm moderation of hate-speech is kinda a must.
- She doesn’t really have any form of tech-background

Were it not for the last point (and my disagreement about the upcoming defederation from woem.men) I’d probably recommend tech.lgbt, because I’d prefer to point her somewhere reasonably large (1k users), which I might do anyways, but I’d be interested in other suggestions.

I'll probably also mention blahaj.zone, but the limited support of differing languages that Sharkey has right now, makes this not the greatest option and I’m also not sure how happy Ada would be with moderating Dutch posts…

Saddened to find out today that apparently #Cohost, an indie nonprofit blogging site that was popular among artists, is shutting down. There was a lot of good content on there, and I know how it feels to see the place that you've been posting your thoughts and art for what could have been years suddenly evaporate, and for some people, I know it's just as they've been getting established there.

A shut down like this hurts everyone.

If anyone is coming over from co-host, or any other site that is going down, or a country like #Brasil / #Brazil that has banned your previous #SocialNetwork, or just needs help getting established on here in general, feel free to reach out to me. I am always an open volunteer for expanding the #Fediverse.

I also encourage anyone who has a Cohost account to go post on there to try and help the users find their way here.

I’ve been looking for a new home on the fediverse for a while, but some of the instances I looked at are either not accepting signups, are invitation only, or the admins never approved my request.

What should I do? I’ve got the skills and resources to make my own server, but then I have to pay hosting fees and maintain that. Is it harder than running an email server?

went from mastodon.social to mas.to. Went very smooth but boy do I need my filters back!
Currently there is no way to migrate or export-import filters between accounts unfortunately. I'm pretty sure #Fedilab used to be able to do that. Might try Bash+Curl or whatever 😁
