    While CloudFlare has immense capacity to handle a #FediHug their systems are tuned to detect such activity as a DDoS and deliberately throttles or blocks that activity. Additional tuning is required and perhaps paying a premium for less restrictive traffic.

    By no means am I excusing Mastodon's many inefficiencies but the problems can equally be addressed by the target websites though adopting efficiencies of their own as you say, then cancelling CloudFlare entirely.

    If I can handle a million HTTPS requests a day from the garage in my back yard when there is a fedi flare-up without the assistance of CloudFlare surely bigger outfits can do better than tell everyone to stop linking to their website!
