I am not unpleased to see that we could contribute to this #FediGrowth for #Kbin a bit with our discussion about the ethics underlying software development and the trust devs may or may not merit.
In the case of #Lemmy, they clearly don't.Even having a distinct instance or even your own does not remedy that issue.
Only a #LemmyFork and defederating from the devs at least two instances would be a solution.

Observing how folks hack together similar migratory strategies (circulating shared handle lists) for #bluesky which similarly accelerated #fedigrowth but birdsite API RIP $ince then. Also on bsky.app there is no batch processing for uploading a list of follows over .csv files, a nice nice feature of #mastodon. Instead, someone devised an autocomplete cell formula that points folks to profiles on the staging server. And since there’s only 1 default instance, no issue with cross domain following.

@doggojones Indeed, the IMHO most important metric for the #fediverse is monthly #activeusers. That's why this metric is in the overview, too.
Now, there are 2.6m monthly active users, which is more than five times higher than 1 year ago (554% growth).
BTW: The highest # of active monthly users so far was 3.8m on Dec 23, 2022. This was after the last big influx from Twitter. This means many stayed active, but also over a million did not become permanent users.
