My experience @rcbo is, that people are tribal and need to gather around a term, a brand a togetherness.
So to evade by all means to get stuck just with mastodon and use that effect of "we" I can't see why no create it. Not in a tiresome repetitive hypnotizing fashion, but it's important to point out the distinctive difference.
For me it's like fediVerse is the result of a more than a decade long search and fight for what we have in common, our #commons and that's ultimately the decentralized communication agreement that evolved into activityPub.
I actually can pinPoint you the the evolution of respective hashtags over time and space of about 13 years.
It's a cultural term at this stage I guess.

1. That the #Fediverse network is Mastodon; and #Mastodon is the Fediverse.
2. That Mastodon is a network when it is not, it is a software.
3. That the fediverse is small.
4. That the fediverse is competing against this and that #SNS; and its objective is to end them. Truth is, there is no such objective, since 2008 (and earlier), the objective has always been to #BringDownTheWalls.
5. That the fediverse is new. It started in 2008. (See: https://codeberg.org/ddfon/federated-sns ), and discussions about a #FederatedWeb started years before that.
6. That the fediverse is only a #microblogging network. In reality, there are software for fediverse blogging, photo sharing, book reviews, podcasting, and video hosting, to mention a few.
7. That the fediverse will eventually close down like all others. Again, it started in early 2008, that's 16 years ago, and it's still here.

We are very happy to announce the availability of the new stable release of Friendica “Giant Rhubarb" 2023.04. The highlights of this release are
- The Mastodon compatible API of Friendica was improved,
- Drag and Drop functionality was added to the Frio theme for image attachments, and
- Christian Pöschl from usd AG reported a XSS fulnurability in a javascript dependency in the gallery of the Frio theme that was fixed.## What is Friendica?
Friendica is a decentralized communications platform, you can use to host your own social media server that integrates with independent social networking platforms (like the Fediverse or Diaspora*) but also some commercial ones like Tumblr.

Discovered @yunohost couple of week ago thanks to @meneer and started tinkering with it this week. Progress so far: my own Matrix server + Element chat client bridged with my Telegram and WhatsApp account. So now I'm chatting with my friends and in several groups in just one interface 😎 Also looking forward to a Slack bridge!

Exactly! The #Fediverse is not just about Twitter-type / #Mastodon-type, it is way bigger, wider, bolder, beyond what Twitter or Mastodon is. There is something for every type of uses, and users. If one is not available, someone will create one sooner or later.
Instead of looking at it from a “which is the better Fediverse platform”, we should look at it from “which one fits what you have in mind”. It’s like Twitter, sure it can handle images and videos, but we still go to Instagram, Flickr; and YouTube, Vimeo, because those specialise with images and videos respectively. Like how Pixelfed and Peertube are.
Like in your example, a small family with specific purpose, doesn’t need a heavy platform like Mastodon. They can opt for the lighter ones like MIssKey/forks; or even lighter than that, Pleroma/forks. And indeed, maintaining a Nextcloud instance is better for them.

@Vivaldi , the company behind #Vivaldi browser, recently launched their own #Fediverse instance, powered by #Mastodon, called #VivaldiSocial.

I love how their instance's server is on a subdomain, but the fediverse ID is on the root domain. This is a rare configuration, it's possible, just rare.

If you are looking for an app or client to use (mobile and desktop) for accessing your accounts in the Fediverse network, there's no list like the “Delightful Fediverse Clients”.
Here are the reasons why I recommend this:
1. Information on which software is supported (e.g. #Lemmy, #Friendica, #Funkwhale, #Hubzilla, #PixelFed, #PeerTube, #Pleroma, #Misskey, #Mastodon, and so on)
2. OS platform supported (e.g. #Android, #iOS, #Linux, #Windows, #macOS, web-based)
3. The license of the project
4. The programming language of the project
5. Inactive projects are properly marked
