  1. Okay, but we can also #federate this now with the #fediverse. Like, #ActivityPub can handle search queries just fine.

So, just running on microcomputers, everyone can put on their own index whatever they want.

A person can _easily_ index 50,000 pages on a rapsberry pi.

A #FediSearch can broadcast any query to known peers. Each peer returns top-k results. The originating node can then aggregate and rank.

So @alice queries their FediSearch, it searches its own index and queries subscribed peers, those peers do the same thing. Nodes can choose who they trust, cache, etc.

The number of indexes pages will be something along the lines of `pages_per_nod * log(number_nodes)`. So a thousand nodes may only cover a million pages, but if the trust network is good, those are probably the most important million pages.

Also, I would venture that you'd have some nodes specializing in having a lot of pages: tens of millions, others just for stuff they like, others specifically for non-commercial interests. Selecting who you federate your search with really affects the ranking.

  2. My experience with #bridgy is that it doesn't work for all supposedly #bridged #bluesky accounts. I've tried following a lot of the #aviation bsky accounts where there's a "web.brid.gy" bc they all migrated there from Xitter, & none of their posts show up in my Home feed save for maybe 1 or 2. I follow the web.brid.gy account here in #Mastodon but for some reason there are no posts, or if there are posts, they don't #federate for some reason with my instance. Disappointed

  3. @alextecplayz @captainrob I’m a massive #pessimist that #TechRegulation will happen anytime soon. In the meantime, we need to #federate and #decentralize as much as possible

starve them of their MAUs. Do not allow them to continue to #DrinkYourMilkshake

It’s the only way to bring them to the table to negotiate regulation

  4. I Have No Idea If Anyone Can See Me, But Here I am, Say Hello If You See Me.

I have been up since 4:30 a.m., I have been cold all day long, I have been battling this site, I broke it after spending 2 days of creating and getting it working, and had to spend most of the day to recover only half, and the site is up, but federation seems to be a bit slow, and either no one can see me, or they dont care to see me, and those I follow, I cant see their feeds yet, so I am abit miffed as to what is going on. Along with my being #disabled and living in #poverty and all that entails, it has been a banner day, if you know what I mean.

A little support can go a long ways for me, $5-10-15 It All Helps, via #cashapp at $woctxphotog or via #paypal at paypal.com/donate?campaign_id=…

  5. @[email protected] re: “issue might be with what you're federating out maybe”, possibly except that regardless of what I’m federating out, the point in my reply to @[email protected] is that #Mastodon is still getting it half-right, which is a bug in Mastodon regardless of what I’m federating out.

Either Mastodon should be treating my hashtags precisely as hashtags, (re)linking them to the local tagSpace *and* ignoring them for link previews, or it should be treating them “purely” as links, and not changing their default/published hyperlink and considering them for a link-preview.

Re: “help to have the activities json representation” — my understanding is that should be automatically discoverable from my post permalink, so all that should be needed for a bug report is my post permalink. Perhaps @snarfed.org can clarify since I’m using https://fed.brid.gy/ to provide that representation.

Either way, is there a validator for the “activities json representation” that we can use to test a particular post permalink, have it auto-discover an activities json representation, and report back what it finds and the validity thereof?

For example, since my posts use the h-entry standard, I am able to validate my post permalinks using the IndieWebifyMe h-entry validator:

    https://indiewebify.me/validate-h-entry/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftantek.com%2F2024%2F132%2Ft1%2F

Which finds and validates that I have marked up my hashtags/categories correctly.

Re: “@[email protected]'s Mention there got federated as a Link instead of as a Mention (since replying to this post didn't automatically include flaki's handle)” — this too sounds like a (different) Mastodon bug, since I believe @[email protected] was notified of my reply and mention of their handle. Perhaps Mastodon is getting it half-right: notifying but not canoeing¹?

Did you receive a notification in your Mastodon instance/client of this reply and its mention of your @[email protected]? Or only one but not the other?

  6. We've been discussing these issues, amongst others lately in the Fediverse-City room on Matrix, what with the relative demise of Meetup.com following its acquisition by WeWork, and the rise of *events over at Faceplant further obviating them having much to do with a plethora of event management projects exploding onto the scene for the past couple of years.

It's been a while since I've visited #Faceplant, so long in fact, I only recently became aware a couple of years ago that they had a marketplace that has largely supplanted craigslist, and finding out just today that they in fact have some sort of events system - that speaks volumes, I think, toward my dedication to dogfooding my #FOSS and simply ignoring, for the most part, there are still some privacy disrespecting operators in the deprecated monolithic silo space of social networking.

#Mobilizon, #Hubzilla, #Rebased, and #Friendica have their own take on how these event management systems should #Federate through the rest of the #Fediverse, while others mentioned in the article below, including #WordPress try to fit into that niche in a cooperative, interoperable way... and it's paying off. Bigtime.

It's a good read, events are powerful for hobbyists, technologists, sports enthusiasts, and just about any kind of IRL or remote attendance awareness and organizing; so it only stands to reason that #DeSoc, and social networking in general include the capabilities to seamlessly propagate events as globally possible.

At the very least, events are heralded as one of the best ways to get free pizza 🍕 and beer 🍺 with others that have common interests. After a veritable shitload of funding from many sources, including NGI0 and even larger corporate sponsors, we're approaching a place where anyone with a Fediverse account, even on the smolweb or most obscure platforms like Threads, will be privy to things like announcements, RSVP, alerts, Etc., of upcoming events, regardless of whether your Fediverse platform of choice directly supports event management.

And it is perhaps a little ironic, that #Threads users themselves will likely have at their disposal, an event notification and management capability in direct conflict with the one that Meta wants them to use - I dunno how that's going to work out, but I think it's pretty kewl that nobody else does either at this time.

#tallship #Fediverse_City #NGI0 h/t to @silverpill for the heads up on the following article, he just always seems to know where that rabbit is hiding in the tophat and pulls it right out when it's most needed, lolz.

  7. The whole #threads fiasco is a no-win situation for #mastodon, IMHO.

If a majority of instances #defederate with #threads, then #meta and zuck can claim mastodon is hostile and move on to the #extend part of "embrace-extend-extinguish" and create proprietary features.

If a majority of instances #federate and accept threads, Meta and Zuck will embrace it but continue to #extend and eventually take defacto control of the #ActivityPub protocol.

@Gargron, good luck threading this needle, man! 👍

  8. Please sign Bandcamp Union's petition to theiur new owner Songtradr.
Songtradr must ecognize and negotiate with Bandcamp United immediately.

Personally i hope, that laid-off staff joins working with decentralized federating software, such as Funkwhale, in order to make their ideas future foolproof for creators and listeners alike, saving both from data hording and investor risks for good then.

  9. With all this current talk of who should or should not #federate with whom, I have a very basic question:

What is the mechanism for a random Mastodon user to figure out which instances their instance (or any other instance) has #federated or #defederated with? Is there any interface or public data to expose that information? Or is it all a matter of rumor, side channels, and insider knowledge?

  10. In simpatico with @MattHodges :

    #hashtags are a powerful key to #community.

    To me:
    #boosts #inform the community.
    #favorites #appreciate the community.
    #bookmarks #preserve the community.
At near-zero cost to #anybody? Used wisely. #ymmv

    #beKind.
    #beexcellenttoeachother.

    #federate. Or don't.

    #weMight #build #anything we all might want. Or hate. Accept some/no #code substitutes & #follow #freely. Enjoy #everything & feed back.🥳

  11. @witchescauldron
Agree. At some point soon there will be polls on Fediverse. Some will be honest, others will be phishing for info.

They will ask people and admins whether they would #federate with a #Fakebook / #Birdsite server.

For the love of goodness, no one answer this question. They will use such info during the #NetworkWars. Do not give #BigTech that ability. They need to #dieInTheDarkness they created.
