Börjat läsa "Pizzeria Roma" av Elin Persson. Den inbundna boken är skön att hålla i, men fick ladda ner #ePub så kunde öka på textstorleken. Skönt att se vad det står :) Och sidorna flyger fram (enkelt tryck på Vol-minus-knappen) i #FBReader som jag portade till #SailfishOS december 2013 (känns som en evighet sen nu). Dags att städa i koden igen. Men först läsa klart och sen andra projekt som pockar på mer. Det är ju ändå semester.

Скачал себе почитать, запускаю #FBReader, он мне, дескать, говорит, а скачай новую версию. Ну ок, скачал, а там на сайте было предупреждение, типа, мы подписали другим сертификатом, нужно будет удолить старую. Ну ладно. В общем, действительно — ругается, старую удолил, новую поставил, разумеется, все настройки к чертям, благо их немного, иду отключать дурацкую фоновую текстуру, ставлю «просто цвет» — а она не реагирует. Окно выбора цвета появляется, я цвет выбираю, жму ОК, на этом всё, текстура как была, так и есть. Хрен с тобой — сношу, ставлю предыдущую. А хуюшки теперь: не могу бла-бла-бла, потому чо там что-то бла-бла-бла. Но, судя по всему, при удолении она за собой каталог что ли забыла подтереть, в общем — не хочет ставиться.
Иду смотреть, что там там случилось. Попутно выясняю (на самом деле не попутно, это я по тексту выше выянил, просто написать забыл: это не «нормальное» приложение, это, блджад, UWP... они даже удоляются из другого места в настройках, не как все). В общем, пытаюсь попасть в \Program Files\WindowsApps — а хуюшки тебе, нет доступа.
Ебись оно всио конём, сделал png нужного цвета, поставил фоном. Но вот нахуя оно так зделоно-то изначально?
В итоге сейчас опять буду сидеть шрифты и оступы настраивать, блджад.

O.o. Nie żebym potrzebował czytnika w kompie do czytania, ale przydaje się kiedy dodaję książki do katalogu OpenLibrary. Co oni tam odwinęli? I jak się nazywa jakiś używalny i lekki czytnik ePub na kompa wobec tego?

New application added to the #TDE umbrella.
tde-ebook-reader is a TQt port of #FBReader 0.12 and aims at providing a good ebook reader for all the platforms in which TDE is available. Compared to FBReader, it currently lacks the ability to download ebooks directly from the internet, but this functionality may get added back at some point in future.
Packages for PSB/PTB are being built and will be available on the #Trinity mirrors in the coming days.

Ebook App FBReader Adds Support for DRM Ebooks
FBReader 2.1 has been released for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with the team behind the eBook reading app calling it “a major update for desktop platforms”. If you’re not familiar with FBReader (the name stands for ‘Favourite Book Reader’) it’s a Qt-based ebook reader with customisation options, an ebook library, and integration with online sources to download ebooks. FBReader was open-source software until 2015, after which it transition to freeware for Windows, macOS, and Linux (closed source, but free), and freemium for Android and iOS (free version limited, paid version available). While older, open-source versions of FBReader are still around, :sys_more_orange:

Just a "page-break-inside: avoid; break-inside: avoid;" declaration.
I wish more e-reader apps (ahm, #FBReader for Windows) adhered to these. #AdobeDigitalEditions--I don't know if I should be surprised or not--respects it though, but I don't find this e-reader app particularly useful for everyday use. It's annoyingly slower than FBReader, it's pretty basic, and it always insists to add the eBook in its library, no matter how many freaking times you say 'no.'

I mean I don't mind paying for content, in fact I only buy #DRMfree #eBooks if any #eBook at all...
I mean #VersoBooks and #ORbooks really do choose to individualize said contents instead, which I think is a fair way to deter piracy without restricting one's ability to read or have it read on/by a devoce/software of choice.
Cuz I tend to use #FBreader with Amber on Black text...

I mean #VersoBooks and #ORbooks really do choose to individualize said contents instead, which I think is a fair way to deter piracy without restricting one's ability to read or have it read on/by a devoce/software of choice.

@fsf #Kindle #paperwhite reminds me a bit of Microsoft's gadgets: excellent hardware, craptastic software.
At least with the tablet-based kindles you load something like the uber-customizable #FBreader

📖 #ebooks migration, from my #Kindle account to my local cloud, completed ✅
It took me a while to do the jump. I had a library on my Kindle with a few hundreds books. I invested a few hundreds bucks over more than a decade to buy ebooks and create my digital library.
I felt very uncomfortable whenever I thought of those precious resources being lost in somebody else's cloud, while the money I paid only granted me the permission to _view_ the content provided by Amazon's servers, _only_ on the devices compatible with Kindle resources, _only_ using the software built by Amazon, and _only_ using Amazon's closed formats. Anything outside of that clearly defined perimeter is illegal. A suspension of my #Amazon account would be sufficient to lock me out of my library. And I probably have no easy way of passing those books to my kid, like parents used to do with their kids before surveillance capitalism came over. I just couldn't accept all of this. But, on the other hand, Kindle provided a very comfortable ecosystem, and that motivated my reluctance.
Now I've finally made the jump though, and I couldn't be happier.
- I used #Calibre to convert all of my Kindle books to .epub. However, the DeDRM plugin (https://github.com/apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools/releases) didn't work out of the box - Amazon has probably come up with some other twists on their KNX compression+encryption to make our lives harder. What worked though was to download the purchased books one by one through the "Download to device over USB" option at amazon.com/mycd - a lengthy process, but at least I got the ebooks in the AZW* format that Calibre and DeDRM could digest.
- I moved all the .epub files on a path shared through #NextCloud - hopefully when the ebook reader apps for NextCloud get fixed my NC interface could also become a place to read my books.
- I installed #Ubooquity (https://github.com/linuxserver/docker-ubooquity) on my local server, and enabled the #OPDS feed. Make the server accessible over my VPN, set up an nginx reverse proxy with HTTPS, and that's all you need. Big kudos to the development team for building a Java app that manages somehow to be lightweight!
- After trying many apps (most of the ebook reader apps on F-Droid have a UI that feels so 2000s), I settled for #FBReader, which comes with a decent UI and good support for OPDS feeds out of the box. The only downside is that bookmark synchronization only works over Google Drive, and it requires the version hosted on the Play Store to work. It'd be nice to support NextCloud, or (even better) any virtual storage exposed by Android.
Except for the synchronization still working over Google Drive, I'm happy for finally making the jump - now I feel like my kid will have something to read even if dad's Amazon account gets suspended, or if Amazon at some point in the future goes out of business.
I'll probably still have to buy some books from the Kindle store (especially when it comes to recent books), but I'll always make sure to convert them to .epub and add them to my open library as soon as I get them on my devices.

@tuxmachines #Foliate has a really nice UI but it's also REALLY slow. Every one who likes Foliate should also try #FBReader this works also on linux mobiles - for the configuration it's good to have a bt mouse - but it's MUCH faster and i use(d) it on even a #Nokia #N810 with 128mb ram and 400mhz. This setup is even faster than foliate on a #Librem5 - and yes, i use #FBReader also on the @purism device ;) why not creating a new fancy ui for #FBReader?!
