"The Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs was scheduled to launch about 2,000 inquiries in 2025, all of which were derailed by Mr. Trump’s order. Among the companies spared additional scrutiny was Tesla, whose chief executive, Elon Musk, oversaw Mr. Trump’s initiative to shrink the federal government."

A quotation from Teddy Roosevelt

One of the worst features of the old spoils system was the ruthless cruelty and brutality it so often bred in the treatment of faithful public servants without political influence. Life is hard enough and cruel enough at best, and this is as true of public service as of private service. Under no system will it be possible to do away with all favoritism and brutality and meanness and malice. But at least we can try to minimize the exhibition of these qualities.

A quotation from Teddy Roosevelt

Under the spoils system a man is appointed to an ordinary clerical or ministerial position in the municipal, Federal, or State government, not primarily because he is expected to be a good servant, but because he has rendered help to some big boss or to the henchman of some big boss. His stay in office depends not upon how he performs service, but upon how he retains his influence in the party. This necessarily means that his attention to the interests of the public at large, even though real, is secondary to his devotion to his organization, or to the interest of the ward leader who put him in his place.

I don't know about democracy, but something definitely stinks.

"..The referees are doing their best to call the game as fair and as proper as they possibly can. And all you can do is go out there and play the game that you love as hard as you can and live with the results..I feel like I've just continued to play the game, and I just try to win. And whatever happens kind of happens." - Patrick Mahomes, smug twat.

The sheer amount of interpersonal drama involved in my supposedly professional environment feels more like a sitcom or drama series than a work setting. It’s staggering how misapplied our discipline has become. Or maybe it’s always been this way and I simply haven’t caught on until now? Either way, the net productivity of my team is near zero and whatever we get out of it is so hard fought for it takes an extraordinary amount of meetings to achieve “alignment”. 90% in useless meetings vs 10% doing the work. It’s staggering. #work #WorkLifeBalance #favoritism #productivity

Favoritism does harm, but I strongly believe it does much _less_ harm if it's openly acknowledged as the way things work.

Being open about favoritism creates a more level playing field:

- It tells people outside the favorite zone that to "win" they need to somehow get inside.

- It tells people inside the favorite zone that them "winning" doesn't mean they're special, just that they're favorites.

Many spread blood libel about Jews on here, Reddit, Twitter, etc

These are the sort of comments i receive when i ask for sources on their daily blood libel

Reporting doesn't do anything as we Jews are inferior, apparently

If they said same lies about other minorities, their accounts would be banned pronto

I'm baffled by the stories coming out of about #SCOTUS judges #hobnobbing with special interests.

I don't remember in which context I ran across this notion. Heck, it might have been as far back as when I lived in the land of my birth, #Canada.

I recall a discussion about #ethics where the ethical rule was to avoid doing anything that could even give the *appearance* of #favoritism.

There was no need to *prove* that someone had shown favoritism. If there was an *appearance* of it, it was a no go.

This seems to be a reasonable standard to me. Apparently, SCOTUS does not operate under this standard.

All the hobnobbing with special interests gives an *appearance* of favoritism. Under the standard I gave above, it would be a no go.

What we have now is judges going to the press to explain their actions in minute details. That's #bullshit. Avoid giving the *appearance* of favoritism, and then you don't have to explain in detail.

Great research about Academic #favoritism at work: insider bias in 🇹🇷 Turkish national journals:

:doi: https://doi.org/10.1007/s11192-022-04355-0

"The findings show that insiders not only publish in large numbers in their affiliated institutions’ journals, but also do so at significantly faster speeds. Specifically, 4938 (29.79% of) papers have at least one insider author, and they are accepted 41.5 days faster than the average outsider submission".
