The sheer amount of interpersonal drama involved in my supposedly professional environment feels more like a sitcom or drama series than a work setting. It’s staggering how misapplied our discipline has become. Or maybe it’s always been this way and I simply haven’t caught on until now? Either way, the net productivity of my team is near zero and whatever we get out of it is so hard fought for it takes an extraordinary amount of meetings to achieve “alignment”. 90% in useless meetings vs 10% doing the work. Favoritism does harm, but I strongly believe it does much _less_ harm if it's openly acknowledged as the way things work.
Being open about favoritism creates a more level playing field:
- It tells people outside the favorite zone that to "win" they need to somehow get inside.
- It tells people inside the favorite zone that them "winning" doesn't mean they're special, just that they're favorites.
