There's a piece in Issue 2 of #OrbitalZine about the Fat Men's Clubs in the early 1900s. It's great. In particular, it has a beautiful quote from a dude who joined the US Fat Men's Club in 1913:

“It is a very human and noble aspiration for men to desire to be regarded in the city, State and Nation as men of weight. To be a man of weight is to be a man of importance, and as I gaze around here and see this unrivalled assemblage of big men, solid men, great men, my soul rejoices at being one of you. Some of you, ‘tis true, are fearfully and wonderfully made. I gaze upon your vast proportions in awe, in rapture and in ecstasy; I look up with eyes of hope. My friends, you can’t keep a good man lean. It has been disputed that Tom Reed of hallowed memory declared ‘No gentleman weighs less than 200 pounds’ – but it sounds like him. By this test, it is evident that every one present tonight is a perfect gentleman. Big bodies, big brains and big hearts – these three things always go together.”
